vacuum leak after installing the greddy elbow

after installing the greddy elbow the car didnt idle, sprayed starting fluid were the elbow bolts to the tb and sure enough there was my leak, so i went to the dealer to buy a new o ring gasket (which by the way is 16 bux) and put it on and it still leaks, so my question is has anybody ever had this problem? what can i do to fix this vacuum leak? should i make a gasket out of the paper gasket they sale at auto zone and slap some silicone on both sides and put this baby together?

thanx in advance for any info

That is not your problem. The elbo can be taken off without hardly any affect on idle. It is located before
the throttle body. The only affect is the low pressure inside the elbo at idle that mught slightly affect air flow.

But a proper running ISC solenoid compensates when the elbo is removed.

You have some other problem!

this is actually on a fc that has the fd uim swap on it, all solenoids and emission have been removed, i dont know about on the fd but if you disconnect your intercooler piping before the elbow the car will die on a fc, so its weird that if you take your elbow off the car wont die, the reason i know that this is causing the problem is cause when i spray starting fluid were the elbow bolts to the tb the car idles so theres obviosly a vacuum leak there

There is a o-ring in a depression on the FD t-body that makes the seal to the elbow. If you dont have one, there will be a leak.

I don't beleive a paper/silicone gasket will be a permanent fix. Temporary at best.

I believe the FC will die due to the fact it uses a MAF inline and when disconnected no air is pulled thru it. ( Hence it acts as if the MAF were unplugged.)

On another note, What other things do you have done to it. Is it a FD engine transplanted or just the UIM onto a T2 LIM?

Also where did you get the elbow from? Does it have a BOV flange on it? I had gotten one from the Rx7Store that had a crack in the weld where the flange was attached. ( Jason took care of it no problem.) It was thin, but as soon as I touched the crack the hole got bigger. Just a thought to check the elbow. Since the flange would be in the general area of the O-ring you replaced.

You also said that all solenoids are removed...did you use block off plates for the components removed? Gaskets as well.

Any chance you port matched the UIM and LIM and went "too far"?

That's bout all I can think of rite now.

Good luck, Dave

On a side note to all do a search on the forum and you can find a place thats called mcmasters. Someone did a write up on replacing the o-ring and buying them from that place for dirt cheap. I only paid 40 cents for the same rubber ones the dealer sells. They also have other materials like silicone.
