Urgent help rquired: Identifying engine number for FD
I have a 1994 FD from Japan and I desperately need to find out what the engine i.d number is. Is every car`s i.d number different or is it the same for every car of that year? I had a Japanese mechanic check for the number and I think he gave me a single digit answer. Does anyone know where the location of the number is in the engine bay? I need to know asap today, so your help is much appreciated. Thanks.
The crank angle sensors are on/behind the pulley. It's next to impossible to get to w/o pulling the motor out.
What do you need the engine ID tag for? We may be able to save you a LOT of time if you share that info w/ us...
And the full engine code is a 13B-REW

Thanks for your kind reply. I exported a car from Japan back to Oz, and the Transport Authority need to know the engine number for the vehicle. If it is so difficult to find it might be easiest to simply tell them the code you just gave me, otherwise its gonna be very tough to take the car engine apart.

Just IMed my lovely Japanese gf who called several Mazda dealers in Japan until one could input the chassis number into the computer and get the engine number, whcih turns out to be 122555. My only concern now is that the vehicle inspectors in Oz will want to get a visual id of the engine number plate as you`d expect to do on a conventional engine. Surely they wouldn`t insist on having the bits and bobs from the engine dismantled... Sounds somewhat extreme. Would it be a big undertaking to id the engine number; how long for example?
I've never seen the engine ID # before....so maybe you can actually see it w/o removing the pulley etc. Prob is, I can't even see the sensors b/c I'd have to remove the IC and battery tray to even get a decent look at 'em. It's the bottom main pulley that has the crank angle sensors on it IIRC.
The other prob you have is, no one's awake over here yet lol. Give it a few hours, and hopefully someone more knowledgeable can tell you something more definitive.

Hi Ramy-san, cheers for your reply. I hope the licensing authority have the good sense, and possibly exposure to inspecting other Fd`s to let it pass through without having to visually id the number. Btw, I had the engine rebuilt/overhauled in Japan and plan on selling ti back in Oz soon. Does the OH add value to the sales price, as I`ve read that its a gamble otherwise with the engine on a used vehicle. I wouldnt buy an FD again, unless it had comprehensive history and arecnt overhaul: does that sound extreme?
No prob...hope it helps some
And yes, an FD with a motor in the 70K and up range usually won't fetch too much, as ppl know it's approaching that magical number haha. I'd stick to a very low mileage original engine, or a rebuild - by a reputable rebuilder. You're in Japan...I'm sure there a TON of rotary specialists

Hi Ramy, If the vehicle inpsection people do require to see the plate, how long does it take to reveal the plate, and is there any shortcut to do it? Do you need to be an expert? I have the battery moved to the back of the car so that frees some space up and the car has had a single turbo conversion, so the engine bay is far more open than the stock standard model. One more question: could a mazda dealer reveal the plate easily?
not to sure if this is possible but you might try holding a digital camera down near the right of the pullies and take a picture of the plate that way.
With your single that mean that the stock airbox and intercooler are gone or so i hope, you should be able to look down here and see it, let me see if i cant find a picture to show you what I mean.
o btw if the engine is a reman or a new reman from mazda, then your stock engine code most likely wont match of with that mazda has on file.

Here it is. I was able to read the tag directly by removing the inlet elbow, alternator, alternator bracket, and vacuum tank.
Mine was a blug metal tag that faces forward, unlike the stamping shown in the other thread.
