Undertrays and Greddy Vmount

Hi Guys,

I currently have a PWR Vmount but the fans sit really low and wondered about changing to a Greddy Vmount. Currently have a GT35 turbo and not aiming for more than 420whp. Is that a good option.

But more importantly I have a 99 spec front bumper, does the Greddy Vmount fit with the stock undertray at all (I appreciate I'd have to take one of the plastics off where it fits round a stock rad) with the lower tray?

Thanks
Gareth

The Greddy vmount kit is seriously awesome and the ground clearance is great. The oem undertray on my 93 front end had to be butchered to make it fit properly, but it can be done. From what I remember, people say you don't need the undertray after the Greddy kit because the angle of the radiator is opposite of the oem set up and it's also properly ducted, but that also means water and stuff could be flung up in to the bay and I don't like that. It's up to you, but I think a custom sheet metal undertray to keep everything protected would be most ideal.

Check out the LRB Speed Undertray!
https://lrbspeed.com/product/fd-aluminum-under-tray/

Whether or not it'll work for you, I can't say for certain, but its a good quality product and can certainly be modified if need be. A friend of mine and I are going to tackle this in the meantime since I have the HKS V-Mount (fans sit super low) and I'll be posting the results.

One thing to note about the LRB, you may consider adding some bracing on it, or maybe some neoprene grommets at the mounts, if the occasional vibration noise from it bothers you (I like it, but wish it didn't vibrate at certain rpm on my Miata)

Hopefully this helps you.

It fits with the stock Undertray. It fits with the 93-95 and 99 spec undertray. And it fits with the 99 spec bumper also. For the 93-95 undertray there’s an inner tray used to force air to the stock rad. Drlll the rivets out that hold the inner tray/air guide to the main undertray and you can discard the inner guide.

You will need to notch a small circular hole in both sides of the 90s of the undertray area (front wing/fin part) to clear the mount points of the radiator. But its easy. And a tad bit on one side of the undertray also Clearance is good.

Do not run without an undertray. It will cost you.

I wanted better airflow when the fans come off so I just used a hole cutter (drill) to cut a pattern in my tray to release the air from the fans from the engine bay. But kept the holes small enough that must debris couldn’t enter and wreck my fans and rad.

pic below

While you can trim the undertray to fit with the Greddy V Mount, it is not needed. With the radiator in this position the discharge is down. An undertray will at least somewhat restrict the flow.

no problem. Glad I could help.

there are a lot of greedy folks but the pics you needed require them going under the car. Mine was already raised. Plus you only need one response. The greddy kit is excellent.

Greddy Vmount guy here there are quite a few of us here, been lurking this thread. I'm here to learn too. Just finished the install so this topic is relevant. I will swiss cheese my nice new 99spec undertray, I'd rather have something there to deflect debris than run it wide open.

I have the Greddy V mount, and I was looking into extraction options. I saw LRB made that, but didn't like the giant holes and thought it defeated the purpose of an under tray anyway. I emailed LRB, and asked if they could custom make me a louvered under tray, and if was told that was possible. Either that, or get some Aluminum and make a louvered plate myself for the stock under tray.

Guys,

if you want to run an undertray just cut out some vent holes in the oem one. It’s simple, free and effective. takes about 15 minutes and works like a charm. Idle your car until you fans come on and just test how much hot air comes out through the vented holes - it works as needed.

Besides, no one actually sees your undertray and most times when moving my fans hardly ever come on. Just saying.

@Aarkaah I totally acknowledge that what you're saying makes complete sense and is a perfectly reasonable method to go about accommodating a v-mount setup. Such is the nature of car modding, though, that sometimes people just want to do it differently or explore different options.

I also asked LRB Speed for a louvred version of their undertray(because I thought the gaping holes were a bit much); after I saw them post a louvred version on their instagram a few years back. I received it a long time ago and it's just been sitting in it's box, along with a bunch of other single turbo conversion parts; including a Greddy v-mount kit.

So naturally I've been following this thread because I'm still largely in the planning phase for my build. But this thread did inspire me to finally open up that LRB box and take a look at the undertray. Now that I've opened it and taken a look, I think the pivot point for the louvres may be backwards..? I can't help but feel like the pivot point should be in the front vs the back. But I'm no expert so maybe being under the car influenced this decision? I'll be writing LRB to inquire, of course. But can anyone else take a look and give any knowledgeable commentary on the pivot point for the louvres?

Or, you could use expanded metal over the openings or similar if they weren't willing to louver it.

I agree with you from a road debris prevention, but my understanding is the airflow is from below up through the intercooler? In that case for better airflow, having the louvers scoop air from the front makes a lot more sense.

@cloud9,

Totally understand your points. My comment was just for the general group.

Honestly, the LRB tray does look great. But I think you may be right about the pivot points being backwards - I am not sure.

I am pretty sure you may have to notch the undertray further at lowest part of the radiator mount points. (see my pics) Only way to find out is test fit it.

let us know how you get on...

Regards,
Ato

Looks like Ford took a similar approach to LRB, actually. Louvres appear angled upward from the rear, collecting air from the top and venting below.

^^this! bend them up so they do not hang below the undertray, it allows for smoother undercar airflow that pulls from the vents.
