underhood smoke behind turbos

whats burning? what can be emitting smoke from that side or is it most likely an exhaust leak? i only see the smoke during successful unflooding while the car is spewing smoke out the exhaust (mixture of residue in chamber + 2-stroke i inject to help w/ compression)

it smells like burning oil to me, so im leaning toward exhaust leak.. but it is white. does 2 stroke burn white?

i've read other ppl with similar smoke symptoms but i can not find the archived posts. thanks for the help.

it sounds like a pretty clear example of an exhaust leak. I'd say pull the grommet from the firewall near the turbo. Take it out and get into a little boost, but not a ton. See what kind of sounds you hear from the turbo/manifold. If you have an exhaust leak, it will let you know with a nice sputtering, almost flatulent sound from the turbo. At least that's what I've heard when I had a leak between the manifold and downpipe.

I thought oil burned blue and coolant was white? It may be one of the coolant lines going to your turbo, but it sounds like a exhaust leak

if the motor is hot (coolant under pressure) it will continue to smoke when turned off for a bit if it is the coolant lines because residual pressure will keep pushing coolant out of the leaking hole. If you have original coolant lines there, they should be replaced anyway.

im sure its not coolant i've smelled burning coolant before.

i started up the car again and no white smoke from either the exhaust or the area around the turbos.

regarding exhaust leak i do hear whining during boost for as long as i have had the car(1 1/2 yrs, 10k miles), but i have never had any sputtering. also idle holds well at around 750rpm. i'll try to pinpoint the leakage though, since the leaking white exhaust HAS to be coming from a bad connection.

also, i think it is common for white smoke to be produced during deflood... excess fuel?

lines were replaced during a rebuild ~60k miles ago. there were some residual wisps of smoke coming from the area after shutting the car off but i don't think it was due to pressurized coolant leaking. if anything the coolant would b leaking into the engine chambers

i have a very very similar situation, my car runs great never has to be unflooded

- after about half hour of running time, white smoke, very light white (almost like water vapor its so light) emits from the turbo side...when im boosting really hard for a whilte its much stronger it seems and is even noticable sometimes outside the car coming from the wheel well on the passenger side

-when the dash fans are on, smells like clutch/oil...no anitfreeze smell
-smells the same under the hood right where turbos connect to the engine

only ideas of mine would be oil return/intake...exhaust manifold leak, or actual turbo leaking oil from the housings im checking it out this weekend

i think its exhaust leak. when i yank the throttle cable i get a deep grrrowl coming from that side that i didn't notice before.

another problem i need 2 check is rpms sticking a bit around 1.4k down to 1k.. so im thinking exhaust leak, plus check tps, and throttle cable..

Check the clamp on your Y-pipe coupler. The coupler can rise up on the clamp, not split, and a mixture of oil and water can leak out onto the hot turbos causing the smoke. Reseating the coupler and tightening the clamp cures it.

video of engine making sounds / rev sticking during idle. is the growling normal? indicative of exhaust leak?

I've had exhaust leaks coming from that area (it was my turbos actually). Yes there was smoke and the car was louder which is a clear indication of an exhaust leak.

I've had this too under hard boost. It was the oil injectors. Check to make sure they are still one-way. When they fail or get stuck, they drip oil on top of the turbos and you get oil smoke for a few minutes after shutdown.

are turbo exhaust leaks only noticeable when boosting? turbo leak meaning.. cracked?

i'm only having smoking problems when the exhaust is saturated with smoke (eg. unflooding procedures) this makes me think that the smoke isn't being made by any type of oil(or coolant) leakage onto heated surfaces
