Uhh, where do these pieces go?

Haha, I always wanted to post a thread like this.

But seriously, my gas tank has had a loose baffle, and recently the fuel level gauge quit reading properly. So today I went in to remove the baffle, and in the process I found these two parts laying loose in the tank under the pump:

I looked in the parts list and FSM but couldn't find anything. I figure it's part of the fuel level sensor, but if someone knows how these parts get reassembled that would be a huge help.

Thanks

I've had the fuel pump out, disassembled the fuel level sender and messed with the baffles and I've never seen those things in my life

If the gas gauge is acting strange it's either the baffle interfering with the float on the sender or it's the sender itself. I've been lucky enough to experience both

My sender had severe carbon tracks on it causing the gauge to read accurately down to only half a tank or so. Cleaning the contacts on the sender fixed that. I think I used contact cleaner and a pencil eraser. Be sure to clean the contacts as well as the wiper.

I've seen springs inside of the fuel pump sock on other cars, but don't recall seeing anything like what is pictured in my fuel tank.

Possibly parts from the gas pump nozzle that make it shut off when your tank is full?, or something else from the gas pump

It does look like some kind of check valve assy. Spring for pressure and the fins allow for flow around while held to the center.

I would venture a guess that this is what is known as an 'accu stop poppet' and Perhaps a 'diaphram spring'? Not something I have seen from an FD? Just a guess....

While I was looking more closely at the parts list, I see two check valves (position 42-720) that look like possible candidates. I really hope it's not the one on the passenger side since that looks like a bear to access.

Today I finally got around to dropping the fuel tank to change the check valve. These pieces fell out of the fuel vapor check valve that is mounting on top of the fuel tank on the passenger side. Whatta PITA.

It is clear to me that the loose baffle was scratching on the part of the valve that hangs down into the tank, and it tore apart the valve.
