Twins for me – long-term investment
Twins for me – long-term investment
Short question, long answer (probably) guys: would it make sense to get an extra set of turbos for future use, and which would you pick for a mildly-modified (street-track) build?
If not, do you think someone will be able to fabricate/rebuild/repair the stock twins in the future?

It depends on how much you drive your car, and the condition (and miles) of your current turbos.
If your turbos are really good, and you dont drive the car a lot, I would say dont buy another set unless you find a screaming deal.
If you do drive a lot, a good second set would be a nice insurance policy.

Good answer. I'm not sure about the condition of my turbos. The boost gauge doesn't seem to indicate any problems and I'm not getting any complaints from my butt dyno.
I've put about 15,000 miles on the car in 2.5 years. Some of those miles are from lapping sessions and track school.

I'd definitely jump at a pair of new '99+ turbos at a good price... part of the question is whether I should get those or BNRs, for example. The current setup is making about 12 psi on high boost and I think I'll keep it close to there.
My suggestion is to buy something very new or new. It's always best to get a good full life out of a set instead of buying used pieces which could be bad. Plus all the time it takes to swap it all out. On some pieces I recommend going new, Turbo's are one of those things when they are stock twins. Now if you are taking single turbo's, some people sell barely used or new turbo's all the time in the for sale section.

It mainly depends on how much down time you want away from your 7.... If your turbo goes out then you have one right then and there, if you don't then you have to wait for it to get there then you have the anxiety of wondering if you have all the gaskets (which some are quite expensive for a piece of metal) then you're on hold once again. Seeing that you're from Canada the time it would take to get though customs etc would be brutal (unless it's Ohio then disregard). And for choosing a turbo is all what you plan on doing with it, mine was on the verge of going out (shaft play and oil was shooting out of it
) and even though mine probably won't see the track I bought a set of BNR3's from Bryan (awesome guy to work with). But it's all within what you want and what your budget is...

Agreed. The way I see it, I can probably use the money now to fix other things, but I'll keep an eye open for any deals that pop up. If twin turbos start getting scarce, I'll plunk down the cash to ensure I've got a spare. It's possible that the twin turbo supply may run out before the rotary engine supply.
