Twin turbo removal, coolant/oil lines?

How the hell do you remove the rear most line on the turbos? I got the bottom nut off, but the top one is wedged between the turbo and transmission. A socket or wrench is impossible to fit on it. I searched but couldn't find anything.

Thanks.

I've only been able to remove them with the turbos off the car. To get the turbos off I detach the coolant lines at the hoses, and the oil lines at the fittings.

Thank you for your reply. Doesn't the rearward oil return line bolt from the block to the turbo itself though?

That's true. Both the front and rear oil drain lines are held with a pair of 10mm hex head bolts. It's the top side that has the tubing fitting.

My question is then - how does an individual go about removing those 10mm nuts? A socket cannot possibly fit in there, neither can an open ended wrench. Maybe I am just an idiot but I find myself mechanically inclined. I am really stuck at this point. Maybe it's the heat and I'm not thinking clearly.

At the rear of the turbos, a hard oil return line bolts from the block to the cartridge. I am going by memory so I may be wrong. This in turn holds the turbo assembly down to the block.

I had little troube getting to those bolts using a flex-head 10mm socket on a 3" long 1/4" drive extension on a 1/4" socket wrench. That little jig can get to a lot of annoying spots in a hurry.

I suppose I just don't have the tools then. I suppose a smaller 1/4" wrench would be able to fit in there. Thanks for the input.

The next time you stop by sears, buy these:
3" long 1/4" drive extension
10mm flex-head socket
12mm flex-head socket

I use these constantly, and they're so versatile I don't have to constantly switch between tools.

having done this for the first time two weeks ago.

i found that i could only remove one set of the 10mm bolts on the oil return lines, both of them where they mounted to the block, i left them connected to the turbos when i removed them.

putting the gaskets on will be a nightmare i am guessing.

I am not 100% on this but I think I remove the bolts holding the drain tube to the turbo instead of the one you are going for. It has been awhile so I could be mistaken on that.

You do have the downpipe off don't you? These were a pita, but I replaced both gaskets last Christmas.
I found that the front one was way way worse than the back...
