Twin Turbo dissasembly

Are there any write ups on the dissasembly of the twin turbos? Wanting to port my wastegate but have never torn apart turbos before. Did a search and didnt come up with anything.

TIA

Anyone tell me how to get the turbo out of the wastegate manifold? Removed the 6 bolts/3 plates. Is it supposed to just slide out or be beatin out with a rubber mallet?

It's a pretty big job. You'll have to remove the DP to get to the turbos. It's tight there. I did the DP myself and it took me a while. You may want to take a look at these sites:

Motor is out of the car, turbos are off, turbos are apart. Except for getting the turbo unattached from the wastgate manifold. Niether Robinette or Scuderia's sites really say much about it. Scuderia's site has a section that lists the steps but makes it sound like the turbo just slides out after removal of the 6 bolts/3 plates. Mine didnt so Im wondering do I need to beat it out and if that is normal or am I missing something?

It's probably cooked on there. Use a little hammer persuation and see if it comes off.

It should be pretty easy if the motor is out...

Maybe Im all messed up here. My understanding (and from what I can see compared to picks of the wastegate Ive seen on here) is that the wastegate is in the manifold within the turbo unit. The turbo is off the exhaust manifold already, and in three pieces. Im pretty sure Im looking at the wastgate and its door atm. The thing is to port the wastgate I need to get the turbo unattached from the manifold that has the wastgate. Looking at the replies I am getting everyone seems to think I still need to remove the turbos from the exhaust manifold which is making me think Ive read wrong and the wastgate is in the exhaust manifold that bolts to the engine, or, Im not making myself clear.

No, You are very clear. I had no problem understanding you.

Sorry I can't help with your problem. I just wanted to let you know that you aren't the one with the communication problem here.

Remove the 10mm bolts (6 I think) and the little plates will fall off. Tap on the housing with a mallet, alternating sides (so it falls off evenly).

Thank you Mike.

Also thank you Marshall, exactly what I needed to hear. Was just nervous to start tapping at it without further input.

Hope this isn't too late, but it makes things easier if you mark the alignment between the turbo cartidge and the housing before you tap it apart. No big deal if not, you just have to make sure the 2 parts that bolt on to the exhaust manfold are flush.

Appreciate the tip. I did mark them though. Figured if they were just tapped in and out that I would want to get them back together the same way.

send to pettit for ceramic coating they will do the porting too, if you haven't done it yet.

ceramic coat the exhaust manifold too, should lower under hood temps. Always a plus.

I was getting ready to do the same thing...and had a stare down with the turbo assembly for a good long time and the twins told me I didn't know what the F_ I was doing...solution Pettit Racing.

turbo dissasembly

the stock turbos are a bitch to take off. do u alot od pb blaster casue zall the bolts will be rusted. remove the downpipe first to gain access to the back of the turbo asmebly. rember that the intake manifold will come off in two pieces a upper and a lower. u will have to remvoe both upper and lower to get at the top exhasut manifold bolts that hook to the engine itself. after you get off the manifold and remove the 5 thousand vacum lines and solenoids. the turbo with come off as a complete unit. both turbos and the sequental gate in the center, after there are off u can start to tear tham apart to port the wastegate. dont forget to take off the oil lines before removal. contact sr- motorsports and talk to one of there technican for detailed information. www.srmotorsports.com

hey joe u wasted alot of time if u think u have to take the upper and lower intake manifolds off to take the turbo's and exhaust manifold off ???

but I do agree on the bolt being rusty,,, PITA

on the turbo teardown its problly just cooked on, rust on I had to beat w/ rubber mallet and spray with penatrating oil, curse, pitch a fit and finally came apart you just have to be persistant

be careful when you are "thumping" the turbo cartridge out of the wastegate manifold. I learned the hard way. One side i got out just fine by tapping, but the other side must have been cold welded. i used about a gallon of penetrating oil on it and thumped and thumped and whacked until it shattered.
