Twin SMIC's. You need to check this out.

So, I was browsing some Japan websites looking for a feed engine torque dampener and came across this. Looks to be twin SMIC's, plumbed back into the elbow. This just amazes me, I dont even know anyone who would want just the stock one, but two? Does that make them twice as un-reliable? Anyways, thought it was pretty interesting and wanted to share, as I have never seen nor imagined anything like this. Now, maybe a pair or re-amemiya, blitz or trust smics would be in order.

Lotta work, lotta pressure drop, shitty cooling.

How much do they want for it?

Btw, stock intercooler isn't unreliable, it's just inefficient (and about the size of a cereal box )

Really, I was told it was prone to cracking and leaking? $150 right now, probably close around $300.

When people tried to run high boost on them, they would split. Racing Beat used to sell a metal clamp for the stock IC to keep it from separating. However, that was really putting lipstick on a pig.

There was someone about 8-9 years ago who tried to put two stock IC's back to back. Yea, it didn't work out too well.

it really looks like someone didn't have the cash to buy a proper SMIC or FMIC setup so they settled with whatever they had laying around.

It most definitely doesnt look efficient at all.

The high boost, high rpm pressure drop must be 5+ psi.

There is no conceivable universe in which this makes sense. It is not even bling.

The SMICs appear to be configured in parallel, so I doubt the pressure drop will be much different than OEM (may actually be slightly better due to reduced flow through each core, but negated by additional fittings used to plumb the system). If they were set up in a series pass-through, then the pressure drop would be pretty gross.

I dont think its a bad idea for an ultra cheap system (this has been attempted on MR2 turbos as well). I think its a poor choice in cores, but if you had a box full of left over OEM FD parts, misc. piping, couplers, and were handy with a welder, its not a bad option vs. single OEM.

Looks like an R35 GT-R or 300ZX Setup.

Vr-4's have two sidemount intercooler's as well. On a piston engine with a V configuration it makes more sense.

I can't imagine why anyone would go to the expense and trouble to do this. All the work to get the piping right would have been very time consuming. That being said, this particular setup should work a lot better than stock, with neither intercooler being asked to work very hard.

An interesting question would be: What (if any) effect would two different temperature intake charges have when they combine at the intake elbow. Lets say that you have been driving around fairly easily, not engaging the secondary turbo. Then you go to full boost at high rpm. The secondary intercooler would be much cooler than the primary. Maybe it wouldn't make any difference??

Answer: The charge air from both turbos is mixed at the Y-pipe, split to the two IC's, and then sent back through another Y-pipe. By the time it enters the intake ports, it will be mixed and you'd have a resultant temperature that is a weighted average of both IC's exit airstreams. No different "effect" than what you would get with a typical single core IC system.

After "wow, that's alot of work" and "How do you duct that anyway?", my third thought was along these lines^.

I think it was twin intercoolers with a v-mount radiator/oil cooler.

that is a truly strange animal. I can't imagine the time, complexity and effort would make it even close to worthwhile. he did an excellent job though. It doesn't seem like it would work very good in sequential mode or any other mode for that matter.
