Ok.If anyone has a pic of what an oil cooler looks like then id really appreciate it.Its just for confirmation but I looked on either side of the front bumper and each side looks identical.A small radiator looking heat exchanger.
Whats the deal? Did I luck out or something? Also ive heard that the touring editions had an oil cooler on one side and the ac condenser on the other.Do these two look identical? If they dont then I really do have twin oil coolers.Some one help me out.Let me know if im wrong or right.

 

Driver's side oil cooler, passenger side is the transmission cooler :-)

If it doesnt then when I swap to a manual im going to convert the transmission cooler to a secondary oil cooler.Does anyone even think its possible?

The passenger side unit, is as said above, a transmission fluid cooler. Its has 9 rows, while the driver's side oil cooler has 10 rows. However, they use the same style hose connectors, mounting brackets, etc, so they're for all practicle purposes interchangable.

You can use the tranny cooler as a second oil cooler, you'd just have to get the lines going from the driver's side oil cooler to the passenger side unit from an R1. You could fabricate your own lines, but they use a weird style connection, so at that point it would be less work and MUCH more effective to just upgrade to one or two nice big performance units...

 

yeah but how much would the lines cost versus a bigger kit?I know the rotary extreme kit runs for almost 1500 bucks.Thats friggin insane for something thats not at all that costly to make.Also does the manual version of the rx 7 come with a cooler if not why does an automatic come with one and a manual doesnt?
I was also thinking of picking up a transmission cooler from checker or autozone and hooking up oil lines to it.But im not sure whether fitment may be an issue and as far as the cooling capabilities of such a unit.Are the oil lines high pressure?If so could I connect the lines directly to the nipples on the cooler with hose clamps or pinch clams.
I just dont see a reason why I cant use any heat exchanger for example a tranny or oil cooler and adapt it to the rx 7 as long as it fits.

 

The Manual Trans does not neeed a Trans Cooler as a Manual trans does not heat up the oil Nearly as much as an auto. The engine oil cooler operates at pressures up to 125psi. I think the Auto trans cooler circuit operates around 100psi ( but internally the auto trans produces pressures up to 1500psi) the High pressure hose on the Power Steering sees pressures up to 2000psi iirc.

also Both my Trans and Oil coolers are the same size (10 Row) perhaps my Trans cooler was replaced w/ an R-1 right side cooler some time before I bought the car

 

I asked my mechanic the same question and i asked him if that was the transmission cooler,and he said they are both were oil coolers. He told me where the transmisson cooler was,but i was like i thought it was only the r1 models had that. But then i was i guess since it's a auto and auto tend to run hotter,maybe it does have two oil coolers,or it was hooked up by the one of the 2 owners before i got it.

 

Follow the lines (if you can) and they will lead you to the source. Regardless, however, if you have two oil coolers or one for oil and one for trans. fluid - you should think to replace them with an upgrade. I wouldn't pay $1500 for oversized cooler unless you are a pro at the track. I myself am putting together a twin 19Row Earl's brand oil cooler kit for my car but also plan to make it available for about $700 (new cooler, fittings, ducts, steel braided lines, and installation guide). If the Pass. side cooler is for your trans. then you can either replace it with a new cooler and relocate or just replace it and leave it where it is. Remeber, whether your engine is the original or rebuilt, heat WILL kill it so one whay or the other, upgrade you oil cooling system and your radiator! It will save you $$$$$ down the road, especially if you have power upgrade mods!

Unless the previous owner did some odd modifications, your mechanic is full of ****. I'd like to know what he was pointing to as the tranny oil cooler....

 

 

The Auto FD does have TWO trans coolers - a conventional oil/water cooler in the botom Rad tank and the oil/air one mounted on the pass side up front.
