turbo whine on stock twins

how apparent should this be? I mean, should the whine be audible with the windows down, or is this the inevitable early signs of a single conversion?

I am starting to notice it a little more prevalently in the car, but I am hoping its because i am getting used to picking out the nuances. It is still new to me, so I listen a lot while driving to find out how normal/good running sounds and feels etc etc.

boost characteristics are normal, and consistent, and its not a real annoying whine like on some of the OC schoolbuses. I can hear it a lot more than my friends TT Supra though..

Anyways, any input would be greatly appreciated

If your car is stock, the sound sould be very faint. It becomes very noticable with a downpipe.

If you have an exhaust leak at the downpipe, it gets loud.

stock = quiet, hardly noticeable
added catback = started to hear it consistantly
added downpipe = heard it all the time
added apexi intake = haven't turned on the radio since!

You can hear the stock BOV pretty well with my config now too...

So many sweet auto sounds are masked with the stock config, its almost a pitty for those who never mod their 7's.

I think we're talking turbine whistle, not the boost "whoosh".

Thats exactly right, Toadman, I'm talking about the high pitched whistle, or whine that comes from the turbos spinning, not the actual "whoosh" of air. I love the sound, I just remember when I would start "hearing" my turbos spool on previous cars, a new turbo was not far off.

Thanks for your input on this folks. I will play it by ear, no pun intended

The only turbo-related sound I have ever found offensive is when the bearing takes a ****. Actually from my experience exhaust does make the turbos louder but also overpowers it. I kinda like how on stock FDs all you hear is turbo. (Wow, I have pre-***!)

If your stock and your noticing a whistle these are the first signs of turbo failure. The one sure fire way to find out is to pull off the black plastic elbow that feeds the primary turbo and check for scoring on the walls around the blades. If you see damage start saving your money now.
If you are running with a DP then yes that is totally normal. Lots of luck

I also was talking about the whining sound from the turbo not from the BOV.

I just got mine too and I'm all paranoid n'stuff, knowing the history of these puppers. I can hear the hell out of my turbos spooling making a whhhhhhhoooooooooosssssssssshhhhhhhhhh...and a slight whine. When I let off the throttle, the sound goes away and I can hear a faint BOV ffffooossshhh. Is this normal?

My FD is completely new to me. I'm getting a lot of whoosh, especially when I really get on the gas, but it's also there during normal/conservative driving. If I drive right next to something like a wall, the whoosh is louder. At any rate, I'm hearing lots of whooshing, is this normal?

Thanks

what kinda whoosh is it?

get a boost gauge and see if the whooshing comes with boost which is good, if it goes whooshing with boost not rising is a sign that you got a leak some where

If you have any after market intake or a downpipie installed these are normal sounds. The intake will cause lots of swooshing and phhhhhsssssssssst. The downpipe will allow for a faint whistle which is also normal. But if its whistiling with the pre cat still in there may possibly be a turbo problem.Check it visually its the only way to know for sure.

I guess the only sure fire way is to get a boost gauge. I'll get one soon and be better off.

thanks

No they will still boost if they havent went all the way out yet and if you dont catch this early you could be sending turbo blade bits into your motor.Pull the elbows and look !! You been advised .

My turbos were really loud when my DP-to-catalytic
converter gasket was bad. I changed it out and retourqued my DP at the turbos. Now it is just a faint whistle. Try checking those two things.

When I pull the elbows, (I'm assuming the intake elbows?) what do I need to look for exactly?

Also, there is oil leaking from somewhere and onto my Y-pipe. Where could it be coming from?
