Turbo Seal Question
RX-7 Gurus:
Problem: Heavy smoke from exhaust under heavy boost, espcially the first few pulls. Heavy blue smoke on startup. Smoke at high rpms. Smoke from engine compartment after a hard run on the track (smells like oil smoke). A decent layer of oil in my IC pipe (the one that feeds the UIM).
Based on these symptoms I suspected that my turbo seals were going, so today I pulled my turbos to send off for a rebuild. To my surprise they look really clean. I expected to see some oil or carbon buildup or something. There is only a very small crack that I wouldn't think would be a problem, which you can see in the second image.
Please take a look and let me know what you think. Do I need to send these for a rebuild or should I look elsewhere for the problem?
I also noticed a significant amount of oil on the engine in this picture. I'm not sure where it's coming from at this point. Perhaps this is the problem and not the turbos?
Thanks for the help!

That's a pretty good oil leak.
Are you making full boost (10psi?) The most likely source for a leak like that is the intake passages, so a boost leak could create that kind of mess.
The place to look for oil residue (or ash) is on the exhaust outlet side. The pics you've shown are in the region before the exhaust hits the turbos.

Rotary Freak
you have a exhaust leak.
if the car is still running, go ahead and clean the oil and run it to see if it comes back.
Wait a sec, how does the compressors look? any oil on them? When my original set went, the primary had oil on the compressor too. The non seq. i slapped on after, the secondary turbine side went so i suppose its possible.
Both times, I had smoke at start up, off throttle and sometimes when making hard turns. All fixed with a GT4094R!!!!!

Each turbo has an oil seal on the compressor and turbine side. That's four places where oil may more may not get into the airstream. It looks to my eyes like a turbine oil seal is what's leaking, so the burnt oil is clear only on the downstream side of the one turbine. There is oil coming thru one or both compressor seals, but apparently not as bad.
Yes, there is clearly evidence of an exhaust leak. Replace the gasket when you put in the new turbos. But it has nothing to do with the oil leaks or shot turbos.
