Turbo Rebuild

Hey guys, where can I get a turbo rebuild kit for the stock twins and a how-to? I am buying some blown turbos to rebuild them, just to mess around, as I already have working ones. Also, what can I do to make them better? Thanks for any help and info.

I wouldnt waste your time or money. Our turbos are not very rebuildable, and odds are pretty good that they will leak and/or smoke. Stock turbo R&R is a bitch, to make matters worse.......

So what would you do? I have little to no money. I am just rebuilding these in case my others blow up. They are already rebuilds. $1700 in too much to do it again. I want to stay with the twins for a while, then I will go single in 2 or 3 years.

The problem with rebuilding them on your own is that they should be balanced. Most people leave that part out and the rebuild doesn't last. Most people that get the turbos balanced when rebuilding typically have a lot better longevity.

Turbo City offers balancing. I've heard of local truck repair shops who can balance their turbos can do them as well, but I have no experience on that.

I shipped mine off to TC and got them balanced after I rebuilt them.

TIP: The great thing about having TC balance the shafts/wheels is that the Turbos have to be completely taken apart, balanced and then reassembled.

So basically they "rebuild" the Turbos for the labor cost of having them balanced plus the cost of the kits. If I recall correctly, the charge for balancing both Turbos was under 80 bucks. That took place in mid 04. Since then I've put over 3K miles on the twins and they're still boosting great with no smoke or leaks.

Well I could do that, $55 for turbos, $300 for rebuild, $80 for balancing=$435. Much cheaper than $1700.

you may want to talk to a local turbo shop, though they rebuild turbos for trucks they can be a wealth of information and they can tell you which parts are still good and where to get replacement parts.
