Turbo oil leak? Or going Lean?

Alright, so car is in storage, for the winter and slowly getting closer to bringing it out. Month or two still yuck! Anyways, before I put her away I noticed I get excessive smoke at ~4500 RPM. Now my friend had a turbo leak in his Silvia and had a nice blue tone to his exhaust. Mine appears to be more so white, which means coolant or running lean. I figure at 4500 RPM why would coolant just start to leak so I'm leaning towards running lean or turbo leak. Any pointers, (I'm going to assume 99% of you tell me to get a boost gauge as it is the only way to tell) but well see. Thanks in Advance guys, your always a great help.

Interesting, I would do a the champagne test just to verify your motor is fine. You could check the shaft play on the primary turbo, when my twins were shot, it would make smoke at idle. Dont believe it produced smoke driving. Just to give you a idea, wish I could help you out more.

Thats interesting, my only thought for diagnosis as the secondary turbo is the RPM the smoke appears is the same as second turbo kicking in. hmm puzzled

Check for oil in the pipes, turbo. On a blown turbo I had it would smoke mostly on decel, especially from high rpms.

Yeah on startup slight smoke as expected then becomes clear and no smoke available. Once I hit the 4500RPM get a nice white(or blue cloud...I'm still thinking more white I'll check again when I pull it out of storage). and no smoke before that. second turbo is either leaking or making me run lean, I will change my fuel filter and give that a try too, needs to be changed anyways.

I just fixed the same problem.................it's most likely the oil sill on the interior of the secound twin. I blew gray smoke at 4500 rpms when the secondary kicked in. To do a easy varification your leaking oil, pull off any of the piping between the cross-over pipe and the elbow and check the inside of it. you will have a oilly resin on the interior walls of the piping. I would take off the elbow, there is a small bump between the elbow and the throttle body were oil should settle. Plus the throttle body is not black so it a little easier to visuallly identify a oilly resido. hope this helps
