Turbo leak

Hey guys new here and this is my first post, anyways I've been looking at this 3rd gen and one of the turbos has a leak, the dealership quoted $4k to fix it, I personally think this is a little much, anyways has anyone else had this problem? I would like to fix this problem the easiest and most efficient(SP) way I can any help would be greatly appreciated.

A leak? What kind of leak? Oil? Coolant?

Sounds like the dealer wants to replace the turbos which, using their prices, will be about a $4k job.

I'm not positive about what type of leak it is, I'll have to check, is there such thing as air leaking from the turbo? If I replace one turbo is it a good idea to replace the other? I'm trying to do all this the cheapest way possible withought sacrificing reliability.

Mazda is not going to rebuild a single turbo, they are just going to replace the twin setup with another twin setup (hence the expensive bill they are quoting you as about $3000 of that is for the turbos).

I would recommend that you take the car to a reputable shop in your area (other than the dealer) to get a second opinion as to what is happening. If it's an oil or coolant leak, it may simply be the supply lines to the turbos which is a LOT less than new turbos.

Try asking in the regional forum for a little help locating a shop or even someone who knows about these cars in your area:

Even if the turbos are toast, good used turbos are relatively easy to come by for around $300.

I think there are quite a few RX-7 guys up in Minnesota - might want to check around on the regional boards and see who else is in your area.

Thanks appreciate it guys, but the car is actually down in TX right now, lol I'm up here helping family out so I should be heading back shortly, I was definatly thinking about getting some used turbos, I just want the car to run right before I even think about doing anything else.

Well, at least get someone to evaulate the car before you do anything. Most rotor-heads will be happy to help out, just bug 'em!

Oh! If the car is in Texas, there are several VERY good rotary shops down there. You really can't go wrong with any of them. Rotary Performance is one of the oldest ones down there:

I'm not sure where in TX your car is located, but check with the South regional forum and I'm sure they will be more than happy to help you find a shop or take a look for you.

If it's "leaking" air, the most common issue with that is the turbo manifold gasket. Replacing the gasket between the manifold and turbos is pretty simple. I had to replace mine once...not that hard.

Sounds like the turbos are just tired and need a rebuild. It may just be one of the the turbos, but if you are going to rebuild it (or have someone do it), better to rebuild both of them. I believe the turbo rebuild kits are around $150 per kit (so about $300 for both turbos) from Turbo City.

Shops that do rebuild usually range from $700-1000 for the rebuild. Having someone do the rebuild for you is not a bad idea unless you make sure to get the wheels & shafts balanced.

As Dale mentioned eariler, you can also find some decent turbos sets for sale here on the forum.
