Turbo kits or custom, which is the better route?
Im looking to upgrading single turbo for the Fd, prices for bolt on turbo kits start from around 2k+. Is it better to get a good shop to do custom parts or bolt on kit route is the way to go?
What are you opinons?

There are several to4z kits on the market. The hks kit it quite alot more expensive than the garret version. Is the extra price worth the extra performance or is it extra $$ just because its HKS?

there are so many options from kits that i'd be surprised if you couldn't find something to suit your needs. you'll end up spending a lot more money on a custom kit so if you don't need it custom-made, don't bother.

I personally went the custom route. There were no V-Mounts that met my liking and requirements. I ended up spending about 4k including the turbo. Of course this was when my fabricator was $75/hr and now he is $100/hr. Good luck!
Of course there is just something so sexy about only having 2 intercooler couplers.

After about 6 months of searching and keeping up to date on topics, I decided the Custom route with the turbo to fit my budget and needs.
And, able to save a TON installing it myself.

To piggyback off what gordon said, it's not just the single turbo setup---you have to think about intercooling, engine management, your fuel system, as well as smaller things like a BOV, heat shielding, random hardware/hoses/gaskets. It can get pretty expensive.....I'm happy with my A-Spec 500R kit, a 67mm turbo that gives 15 psi by 3700ish rpm. I have a monster thread in the single turbo section about my build up if you search

You FD guys are lucky that there are so many bolt on kits available (although OEM parts are in general way harder to find). On an FC, even though they are single turbo from the factory, there are really only a couple manifolds readily available and almost no full bolton kits still made except the Greddy 20G kit and a few kits from smaller shops. Usually we have FC guys have to fabricate at least some of the plumbing.
I've enjoyed putting my T04S setup together but it's very frustrating to assemble all the random parts, fittings, wiring, etc for all supporting mods.

I've put two custom kits together (including fuel and intercooling), and have saved enough money to buy parts for custom dual oil coolers, overhaul my JDM gear box, and build a custom AI system.
Its nice to have a friend who owns a shop, and friends and family with skills...to help put my ideas into reality.
Of course I don't try to have the the fastest car around...just one that everyone wants
