Turbo boost question
I apologize in advance for posing a question which I’m sure has been answered numerous times for a 3rd generation RX-7. Perhaps someone can direct me to a previous answer or another site with the possible solutions. I have owned the car, a 1994, for five years with no previous concerns or abnormal operations observed. I drive the car about 1500 miles a year (spring-summer).
Boost increases rapidly to 6-7 psi as engine speed rises from about 2500 rpm. The boost then decreases to about 3 psi as engine speed approaches 6-7000 rpm. There is never a sound of air leakage during this acceleration; however, as the throttle is lifted at the end of the test, there is a definite abnormal sound of what appears to be rushing air. This data is from trials in 3rd gear.
I have looked at and felt all the hoses I can see and find no splits and none seem loose.
From what I have read, it seems the primary boost has not reached a value to sufficiently operate the control air system. Before I begin a disassembly of hoses, solenoids and whatever else, I’d like to reduce the number of possible suspect component(s) if possible.
Thank you in advance. John

I would first check to see that your bov is working properly. You can check it with a mitty vac following the service manual. Also check in the turbo actuator nipples to ensure that the restrictor pills are in place. Follow the trouble shooting guide here and you should be able to find the problem.

i would actually first take off the intake box and check the turbo actuator and pre-spool hoses for cracks or splits if you havnt already. pop them off and inpect all the sides. the pills should be in them, but just to be sure everything is a-ok, blow through them to see if there is restricton and no pin hole leaks.
and if they are silicone and not the stock hoses...be sure to put them back the same way they came off.
cheers

Thank you both for the prompt and detailed explanations. I will investigate further as soon as possible, using your guidance. The appoaching arctic winter of northern Illinois may hamper my progress however.
I am a bit envious of so many smart folks on these forums with so many modified cars.
Thanks again. John

The pill sizes are roughly
Stock Wastegate Pill is about .062"
Stock Turbo Pre-Control is about .058"
The smaller you go the more boost you will see. All of this info is on autosportracetech.com in the future please investiagate the links we provide.
