Stock RX-7: 210whp

Stage 1: 240whp
Changing out the exhaust system makes a world of difference on 3rd generation RX-7s. Underhood temperatures drop dramatically and exhaust flow is greatly enhanced while keeping legal smog status. Several other catback systems are available and are in stock.

1. Bönez Stainless Downpipe & Performance Catalytic Converter $795 $651.90
2. GReddy Evolution Exhaust $449.95

Total parts: $1101.85Total Labor Hours: 4hrs

Stage 2: 260whp
Our next step is to enhance intake efficiency and fuel flow. Either the GReddy or APEX’i Performance Intakes will yield excellent results. During this installation, we will make sure boost pressures are stable and at proper levels.

1. GReddy or APEX’i Performance Intake System $249.00 - $274.95
2. RP Competition Fuel Pump $264

Total parts: $513 - $538.95 Total Labor Hours: 3 - 3.5hrs

Stage 3: 310whp or more
The factory engine computer is adequate to a certain level. To go beyond, we need to have full programmability for fuel, ignition and digital boost control. Nothing controls a 3rd generation RX-7 street car better than the APEX’i PowerFC. Power realized depends heavily on injector sizing, turbo, engine type, and the general condition of the car.

1. APEX’i PowerFC Engine Management $980
2. APEX’i FC Commander or FC Datalogit $299 - $350

Total parts: $1279 - $1330Total Labor Hours: 1.5hrs + 1hr tuning

Stage 4: 325whp or more
Now that the major upgrades have been addressed, it’s time to help the engine breath cooler. The installation of the GReddy Standard Mount Intercooler and hard piping will help to round out the power of the car. An intercooler keeps charge temperatures more even and offer less restriction. The piping improves durability as well as give a performance advantage.

1. GReddy Standard Mount Intercooler $1,198
2. GReddy 2-pipe kit with cast throttle elbow $189
3. Efini turbocharger y-pipe kit $249

Total parts: $1636Total Labor Hours: 5.5hrs
this is from the rx-7.com website

but the first thing to do when you get on the forum is to search the faQs

dont worry about power mods right now. you need to make sure the car is running 100% before doing that. spend your money on things to make it more reliabel ie: vacume hoses ast db etc... all of these things can be found in the faqs. if you jump right into the power mods dont expect your motor to last very long. the goal your shooting for isnt to hard to do but it will cost $ and lots of planing. oh yeah congrats on the purchase and take care of her!

be like me and do a lot of reading and research. u'll find ur answer without irritating the veterans.

it is infact not to hard to reach that goal.

however u could be at the breach of maxing out the stock turbo's to its efficienceny.

anything you do, just make sure you have it tuned for it with an aftermarket ECU/fuel controller.

but i would worry about all the reliability modifications and making sure everything is in perfect condition before you start modding and trying to reach that power goal.

learn the car, learn how to drive it, realize its breaking points and study the cars throttle response, learn its cornering characteristics. Even though u can obtain all that power with Ease, you can still be slow.

i came from an ae86 4age background and learning about the FD rx7 is way more challenging and way more fun. i don even have the car yet, but i love reading about it and learning about all the cool tricks to make this car an outstanding track car. ive been into all types of cars and years of researching is your best bet in learning how everything works. after 9 years of building different types of cars, i feel that i need to graduate and move onto this beast so i guess just keep reading and learning. Im sure alot of rotary veterans would agree with me on this.

While these 'stages' are reasonable, one must stick strictly to them. So anytime I see 'exhaust' mentioned to someone new, I feel compelled to explain that while freeing up the exhaust helps, freeing it up too much will blow the engine. In fact, this stage 1 will produce increased boost levels and boost spikes on most cars, which is dangerous.

If you or the OP go about installing exhaust mods, you need to have a boost gauge, need to know the boost pattern before modding, and understand what boost creep and boost spikes are and how to recognize them. All of this is covered in the FAQ, but many new owners and exhaust shops have no idea they're just a 'full exhaust' away from blowing the engine.

Yep, search and read about MAINTENANCE. No mods before the cooling system, fuel system, drivetrain, tires, suspension, engine, etc are completely and positively in perfect maintenance.
