Transmission Rebuild Kit
I'm looking to possibly purchase an R-1 this weekend with a worn 5th gear synchronizer. My reasoning is if your taking out the tranny why not replace all synchros. I've searched through the threads but can't find exact company websites that sell these. I see the actual rebuild thread & how-to but where can I purchase either a manual tranmission rebuild kit or else just the 5th gear synchro. Also any advice would be highly appreciated. Thank you

There is no re-build "kit" per se. You will need to tear-down the tranny and spec out what needs to be replaced. You will then need to order the individual synchros, hub assemblies and bearings as are necessary. PM "dgeesaman" on here. He knows as much as anyone about the tranny rebuild. By the way, the steps get a bit more involved as you go beyond the 5th gear synchro.

Call up Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda (888 533 3400).
He has the best prices around on mazda oem parts. My father recently purchased a complete kit through him (all synchros, seals, 2nd-to-5th prevention spring etc) for around $450-$500.

^ What JD said.
5th synchro isn't too hard - maybe a dozen parts to remove, including one decent sized nut and one bearing to pull. It's nearly the top card in the deck.
Getting in to any other parts other than reverse gear is much more involved - you must remove the shift linkage, bellhousing, a massive nut on the mainshaft (requires a specially-built socket), pull 4 bearings, navigate the shafts out of the housing, and use a press to remove the synchro hubs from the mainshaft.
So I'd say 5th synchro is about 1/10 of the total rebuild job. If it takes you 3 hours to drop the tranny, 2 hours to change 5th synch, and 2 hours to reinstall the tranny, then add 5-10 to do the rest of the tranny rebuild. It makes the project much more than a day's work. It's not that it's really hard, but without a decent shop area to work in and a couple purpose-made tools, it becomes rather tedious and slow.
You can get complete bearing or bearing&synchro kits for a fair amount less than Mazda from places like Transtar Industries or GT Transmissions. But you will still need to wait if you find the need to replace any gears or shafts, or you find that your shifter linkage is worn. Mazda is the only place to buy hard parts (shafts, gears, etc). There are enough pieces that may turn out to be worn that its not safe to assume the bearings and synchros will be everything.
