Transmission rebuild
I just got off the phone with a local tranny shop. I have my tranny pulled out (b/c I blew the engine), and I figure now is a good time to get my 1st to 2nd grind fixed. They quoted me $350 labor for a complete teardown, and then extra for whatever parts I will need. The guy said he figures around $400 for the bearing & syncro kit. Of course it depends on what I need to fix it.
So I'm looking at $800 to rebuild my tranny. Does this sound reasonable? I was hoping I could get the 1st to 2nd grind fixed for around $300, but it seems that isn't going to happen.
I was considering tearing down the tranny myself, but I changed my mind after reading through the FSM.
Thanks,
Paul

$800 is not that bad really for a rebuild on the transmission. You might be able to do it yourself for $300. Im currently working on one of mine, its straight forward from the manual but the only hard part is working with out the SST's.

Damn, you guys talking about this makes me jealous! I need a full rebuild cos I grind from 1->2 and my 5th gear synchro is broken. I just can't afford it. Is it tough to pull the tranny w/o pulling the engine? If so, maybe I'll try and pull it myself and take it to a shop for the rebuild. Dunno...

Yepz....I got quoted by Rob @ Pineapple for 750 to 950 for a total Factory Standard Rebuild. That's if he has to replace a large majority of the parts.
He's rebuilding my engine and tranny within the next 4 weeks. (I fuggin hope it's done in two..but who knows!)

Pulling the tranny should not be that hard. You'll only save about $200 on the labor by doing it yourself though. I was quoted $550 for the labor if they had to pull it, $350 if I pulled it and brought it to them.

*If* I do get it rebuilt, I'm keeping the same gearing. I'm debating on whether or not to do an LS1 conversion... this repair is getting really expensive.
Tranny: $800
Engine: ~$2400
Clutch: $550
Gaskets: $150
Injector cleaning: $150
And that's pretty much the bare minimum to fix all the problems ($4050).

I think my clutch is starting to slip, and I was wondering where to take it.
I'm hearing a whirring noice starting out into first (sporadically), and I've noticed that when I step on it in fifth the odometer sometimes climbs up a few k and then drops back down before I actually pick up any speed...
In this case, would I be better off taking it to a transmission dedicated shop, or a rotory performance shop? Just not sure how exotic the tranny is...

Mobius: Any tranny shop can do the work. It is not rotary specific. The only tricky part is that it has a 'pull type' clutch, but it's not a big deal.
vudoodoodoo: Yeah, the LS1 will cost more up front, but I will end up with a more reliable car, tons of low end torque, more horsepower, better gas mileage, and I won't cringe every time I floor it. I figure the car will cost me $4K to fix everything now... and that is not even touching the high mileage turbos, which could fail at any moment. I might be able to get $2K for my drivetrain. That is a total of $6K I can put towards the conversion. I may need another grand or two to finish it up. I'm haven't decided yet. I need to make a trip up to Tuscaloosa and talk to Brian Hinson and check out his car.
