Transmission problem!

Ok, so I have a 93 FD with 75k miles on car and 25k miles on engine. I've searched and only came around synchros. This is my problem. 3rd gear sometimes grinds, but only rarely. I do get clunk sounds when putting it into gear and realising the cluth, but would that be a transmission issue? I get a rattling sound when I take off in first. When I go down gears and realise the cluth, I get shuddering sounds, is that transmission related!? Do I need to rebuild my transmission? Will it get rid of these problems!?!? ARGHH!!! Hahaha.

Dennis,

The driveline slop in these cars can be due to a lot of factors. this is a list of them in order of probability. the transmission could very easily be the root of the problems but with 75k on the chassis most likely many of the following are also adding to the problem.

motor mounts
diff bushings
diff
PPF (cracked)
axles
pilot bearing
Internal gearbox (worn syncro hubs )
suspension pillow *****

The stock driveline is really soft to begin with so as stuff ages it can get really annoying..IMO reinforcing the PPF and going poly on the motor and diff mounts is a must.

sounds like a combination of things. possibly synchros? try changing your gear oil. go with NEO brand synthetic.

Bushings? probably your rear end pillow ***** making all the noise.

I've recently changed oil. What happens when the bushings need to be changed? I think mine need to be changed. But will that explain all the noises when realising the cluth? And making the sounds?

How difficult is it to change the bushings? And to change the synchros?

rexhvn,

Do you see/feel the shifter in the car physically moving (not just some vibrations)?

When applying full throttle than letting go of the throttle, it does shake a little bit. You can't see it, but you can slightly feel it when your hand is on the gear ****. It tends to shake a little more in first gear when taking of as well as rattling/shaking noise towards the front of the gear box.

While the car is stopped is there an audible whine or grinding with the car idleing in N and does it go away when the clutch is disengaged and a gear is selected?

NO there is no whine or grinding when the car is idleing in N. The only time it does grind, is when going into second which is very rarely.

Sorry serensever, I just noticed that when the car is in N, there is a slight whine, but when I engage the cluth, it goes away.

what I was tring to figure out was how bad the intermediate and input bearings were...since you didn't even notice it at first I would say they're probably ok, when they go it makes a ton of noise in N.

I'm have the same issue, when I shift into second sometimes it sounds like its grinding but other times its fine. I just hope I'm not ruining second gear.

when was the last time you change the clutch? when your shifting and you hear or feel it grind, it could be the clutch is not disengaging right away. for the sounds, when you have it N and disengage your clutch (pedal down) and hear a sound, it's the throw out bearing(release bearing). If you let out your clutch pedal slightly it and hear noise, it can either be your pilot bearing or release bearing. transmission also can be bad like syncro's and bearings.

I haven't changed the cluth since I bought the car. I am planning to replace my synchros and bearings very soon, will this make my gear both a lot smoother? In regards to my cluth, as far as I know, its not slipping/grabbing correctly. When I do let it would to a certain degree, when down shifting, I do get a shudder sound, coming from my flywheel which needs to be remachined smoothly?

make sure the tranny is the cause because it can be your clutch linkage or something with the clutch. good luck!!!

I agree - this sounds like a clutch issue more than a tranny issue. Without seeing or feeling the sounds in person it's hard to say though.

It might be wise to take the car to a good transmission shop and get their opinion.
