Yep, I bet it's an RX-8 trans. It has provisions for a power plant frame to bolt to it so it's not an FC trans and it has a push-style clutch so it's not an FD trans.

Most of the US RX-8 trans (maybe all) are 6-speeds. From what I understand it's not even close to a bolt-in. Also I think the 6-speed is weaker than the old FD 5-speed.

Yea the US RX8 is all 6spd or auto. Japan and maybe some other markets got a 5spd as well. I seem to remember reading here about using the 5spd trans in the FD, but not a bolt in and go deal.

that is the 5 speed from the low power Rx8, we didn't get the low power engine with a manual in the US.

its basically an FD transmission with a normal clutch, not sure what the other differences are (could look though, have the parts catalog)

Rx-8 5 speed. Basically an FD internal with a different bellhousing for a push type clutch and a different tail shaft to accommodate the PPF and length of the RX-8

It's a good option for REW swapped RX-8's as it will handle more power than the 6 speed imploder box

Wonder how much those run for. That would be interesting if you could take a shredded FD trans, swap the bell housing and tail housing over, and have a nice transmission.

Used to be you could get good used JDM trans for like $300-500, that ship has sailed.

I saw that price trend and began hoarding FD transmissions. I bought them cheap from local FD owners that were V8 / 2J swapping. Got 4 good ones now, lol.

I browse ebay for them occasionally since I came across that swap before. Right now there's a full 4 port renesis swap with the 5spd for $1k but I didn't see any transmissions alone. Kinda hard to search for as putting in rx8 5 speed transmission brings up all the 6spds too.

VEEEERY interesting. I'd love to get my hands on one of those. I have a parts trans I could use too.

I have a feeling the hard part is just getting that trans in the US. Getting the 6-speeds is probably a piece of cake.
