Transmission or engine removal?

Well...my friend blew up his engine and we took it out and put a reman in. There was just one little hitch. Upon engaging the fork mechanism on the pull-type clutch (it was my first experience with this, bear in mind) I accidentally popped out the brass collar from the clutch that is around the input shaft and therefor could not get the clutch engaged. Yes, I know, I am a dumnass So, I guess I have two options, pull the engine back out or drop the tranny. Which one would you do and why?

Also, I mashed the clutch down after I popped the collar off, will that mess up anything If the fork isn't on the brass collar?

Thanks.
