Tranny went out

Well, transmission just took a poop on us. Need to replace it... Should I just get a low mileage used one, or spend the big bucks for a reman with a warranty? Or maybe have this one rebuilt... any upgrades you can do to it to make it more durable?

Thanks
Chuck

Not really sure... It just happened about an hour ago. We bought the tranny used with 110k miles on it... (car originally had an auto). Always seemed to shift sloppy. Changed the oil in it last week and found it to be a LOT of metal shavings... so I knew it was going Right now we've pretty much lost the dependable use of 1st and 2nd. When the shifter is in those gears it feels REALLY loose. And I've lots of incedents of shifting from 2nd to 3rd where it totally missed the gear, but the shifter still went up into place. So I'm pretty positive SOMETHING is wrong with it... What's a rebuild usually cost? How involved is dropping the tranny out yourself? Are there any upgrades a person can do to make it more dependable?

Thanks
Chuck

Sorry to hear it man.

It is normal to have some metal shavings, depends on how much you have.

On the loose shifter make sure you have all the bushings in there. There are quite a few, if they go bad then the shifter will be really hard to use.

Is the tranny noisy? It seems like most of your complaint has to do with the shifter.

We just changed the shifter bushing last week along with a new shifter (the short shifter sold on ebay frequently). Shifts the same way it did with the stock shifter. It was making some noise tonight... kind of a gindy noise in second gear. So I'm "pretty" sure it's the tranny.... but not absolutely positive. Maybe there are some other bushings that need replaced. I've always complained about the way the tranny shifted though. Never thought it felt real strong. Oh well. Don't worry about it. The main thing was at least we got the conversion done. You gave us a heck of a deal on all the parts. So don't worry about it... I just want to make sure the next one we put in here is really strong, shifts nice, and lasts a long time.....

Again, are there any upgrades a person can do?

Thanks
Chuck

Well, I just had my brother pull off his console to see if the shifter/bushing was all in place correctly. He found that he didn't get the shifter bolts tight enough So that's why it was doing this. I still say the tranny doesn't have a lot of life left, but for now it looks like it'll be ok.
At least he learned something out of all this I've been having him do most of the work on the car lately so he can learn how to work on cars a little. I guess I'll have to keep a more watchful eye on him next time... Happy it was something simple though.

BTW. Is there a gasket that goes between the shifter and tranny? There wasn't one on it when he pulled off the stock shifter last week... Looks like there should be though... That could be causing some of the grinding/vibration noises.

I don't remember there being a gasket on mine but it's been a while so I could be wrong. If there wasn't supposed to be a gasket there but you want to try something anyways you could always try some silicon in a pinch..
