Tranny Rebuild; what's best?
Tranny Rebuild; what's best?
Background: Seems it is time for an overhaul on my '94's tranny. I am getting a noise akin to a bad throw out bearing. Push in the clutch and the sound goes away as the trans stops turning.
Diagnosis: Two shops have offered the same advise. Rebuild or replace. Needs new gears, do the syncros while you are in there, and do the front pilot bearing too.
Dilemma: Having a new set of gears plus the other stuff may not yield a noise free tranny when it is done. Is this true? Anyone have that experience with a rebuild? That possibility is unthinkable and would push me to having it swapped out with a Mazda reman. unit. That means some seriously more $$$

Unless you live close to the rebuilder shop, I might just go new although it's nearly double the price. You are close to PFS although I don't have any experience with their trans rebuilds. I had mine done at Pettit and had a lot of noise afterwards. It had to ship it back and forth twice and I had to pay to remove and reinstall. Pettit did take care of me and covered the R&R and shipping. The trans is still not quite like new (a little noise in 4th)so I am out to lunch on this one. I would find a place like KDRotary to blueprint\rebuild or get a new trans from Malloy Mazda at a discount. I'm prone to lean to a new one if you have a lot of mileage...
