Question Trading a civic si for an Fd...good idea?

Ok so I have a 2006 honda civic si in fiji blue with 12km miles and I have offered it as a fair trade for a 93 fd touring edition silver with black interior with 45km miles. I would use the fd as a dd and I would like some advice on the situation if its a good trade car with warrenty versus one without one, a year old car versus a 14yr old car,the rotary engine versus the k20 and anything else that I have forgotten please inform me everyones help is greatly appreciated. thanks

Kenneth

Is the FD cooler? Yes.

Would you want it as your dd? No.

Your civic gets maybe 25-33 mpg lets say. My FD gets around 16-17mpg so if you drive a lot that's almost double the fuel bill. Stuff breaks, and it's not as cheap of parts as it would be for your Honda. Yes as sonorous7 said the FD is cool as hell, but there is no way I would have gotten one if it was my DD. I use an 06 Cobalt SS for DD.

Thats true but its such a good trade car for car and everything your saying is very true and I would plan to buy a beater in a year or two and the fd isnt loaded with miles or mistreated but as you say parts are expensive. Damn I really want this car and when does the oppertunity of owning such a well taken care fd occur?

What is the main thing that you could be sure that would go wrong with any fd?

if you buy a generally well taken care of FD, you shouldnt have much problems. I DD my car, its not a long ways to work or anything, but i do. Its my main means of transporation, and its great. Nothing really has gone wrong. Just some minor stuff, like new front rubbber, my FDP is leaking ( fuel) But you have to expect little things to go as the car is 15 years old.

And once you fix these little things, its making you FD more reliable by the minute. So i say go for it! Its a beautiful car, and if your willing to put some extra money into it ontop of the buy, then you'll be fine.

KBB says an 06 SI is worth about 18-20k.

Unless the FD is PRISTINE and has full papers, I'd say you are taking a hit. I'd do it for the FD and a couple grand on top.

This isn't even taking into account the convenience of having a newer car under warranty, much less the fact that a turbo rotary will last 1/2 as long as an N/A civic at best.

Also, do you even own the civic yet?

So expect minor repairs and always be prepared for major ones. This being my major means of transportation I cant have too big of things go wrong but if somthing does happen such as a broken apex seal how much would that be?

The problem is, there isnt ONE thing that you can be SURE will go wrong. Depending on a ton of little things and how the car was cared for/driven. plus the car is 15 years old now, so you'll have age problems.

Unless you have a different Daily Driver along with your FD, I would never recommend one as your only mode of transportation. The car just wasnt designed for it.

Broken apex seals, expect $3000 to $6000 to properly fix it and all the other problems that will be found in the engine bay.

Make the trade, and pick up a late 80s/early 90s crx or prelude as a daily driver.

like they said keep the honda....and if you want a fd ...give it time and look for one when your ready...
i looked for a few years...just bought mine last aug.(bone stock, from the original owner) so good fd's are still out there....
if something goes wrong with the rx7 ...its not like the honda ....you can't just go to the local parts store to get parts...
parts are more expensive then honda parts...
this is coming from someone that still has both...
good luck

Dude if you think you can handle it don't keep coming back to us for comfort over your decisions. Your the person that's going have to make the call. Most of the people are going to say these cars are old so stuff tends to break and the car may be down for a while...unless you can work on it yourself and have ways of getting parts fast. Also remember, I know your in FL, I think so you might have some good rotary mechanics then. If something goes wrong with my engine or whatever I have to do the stuff myself mostly and wait on parts...hence downtime. It's your call getting the FD, it's just a lot less of a headache if you have backup IMO

Err, a broken Apex seal would require an engine rebuild. Figure 2.5k+ just for a reman engine. Rebuilding the old engine can be cheaper depending on what's still usable.

Ahh, Rich beat me to it...

If you own the civic outright.. keep it!!!!

save up and buy an FD later, or finance one. but keep the civic. If i could do things over, I would have kept the car i sold for the FD and kept both. then I would have a truck a car and an FD and a motorcycle right now and would be sitting pretty ALL the time.

Keep the civic.

Did i mention keep the civic. if you want an FD that bad, go to e-loan.com and take out a loan on the FD. if you have a 700 credit score then you can get whatever amount you want for your FD. that's what I did. no early pay off penalties, good interest rates. Just make sure to have a daily driver.

Keep the civic.

The FD is also a money pit. constant little things need attention. I do hope you have a good paying steady income.
