Talking Totally new to the scene of RX7

Hello people
I am lookin to buy an RX7 in the not to distant future, iv been reading FAQ and allsorts about them, and I have admired these cars for years & years.
I know there is a lot of maitenance comes with them but I am willing to put up with that.
A few Q's
Any advice on what to look for when buying 1 of these babys would be much appreciated.
Iv read that they only come as a 1.3 either non turbo or with turbo, yet I have seen some for sale with like 2.0+ Engines???
And are they as unreliable as people make out them to be.
I am from London U.K and they are pretty rare round here.
Thanks in advance for all your help with my noobie questions, and anything else you think I should know about please Comment on.

Thanks

Russ

wow.. someone is lying to you.

all 3rd gen rx7's came twin turboed with 1.3 liter engines. there are no 3rd gens from the factory with 2.0's... RX7's are not very reliable cars due to their high maint, Although some will argue.

P.S use search. questions like yours get asked about 50000000 times a week.

As long as you dont abuse it too much and maintain it good it should be just as reliable as any other car....but once you start modding it , that when it starts to wear down quicker...

many people count the "13b" engine and its derivitives as "2.6" ltrs. it just depends how you mesure displacement.

but if you see 2.0/4.0 3 rotor, then it is a cosmo "20b" engine swapped into it. its a similar engine, with just another rotor on it for more displacement.

I love it when people who think they are knowledgeable post and remove all doubt that they are not.

From page 137 RX-7 Mazda's Rotary Engined Sportscar

The new model in Japan
The all-new RX-7 was announced on 16 October 1991.
...
The Savannah name was gone, and the new model was referred to as the Anfini RX-7. The Type S was the cheapest in the range.....
Japan
Type S = US base
Type R = US R1/R2
Type X = US Touring.

That looks like a great price, about 10K USD.

Find the UK RX-7 club and start making friends. They will know the values over their better than here, and someone can help you look at the car. Unlike Americans, you have access to the entire production range of Japanese 3rd gen RX-7s. This means that if you the money, you can get some nicer, updated 99+ RX-7s. If nowhere else, start in the European forum in the regional area of this site.

If I remember correctly, there are N/A FD's in Japan. Can someone back this up?

Not the issue. He said RX-7s. He probably researched RX-7s. He didn't specify 3rd gens in his statement, allthough we all assume that is what he is thinking of. I didn't mean to stir up the phantom N/A 3rd gen.

They can be pretty reliable, from what I'm told. The main issue though is cooling, if you're engine overheats your car is dead. There's also the dreaded ladder effect of one thing leads to another, I'm currently having it right now with my radiator and the rest of my cooling system, and I've had the car for less than a month and it only has 73000 miles on it. But a fellow forum member was telling me about how the rotary engine is way more reliable than a piston engine, if given the same circumstances, for example if both engines were non turbo and running under the same conditions, the rotary would outlast the piston engine since there's less moving parts? Can someone verfiy that?

I would buy the newest, lowest-mileage, best maintained car I could find if I were you. Look for the '99 or newer, they made quite a few updates in '99 that should make the car more reliable, less subject to overheating and detonation (two main causes of RX-7 engine rebuilds). Personally, I would avoid buying a modified car unless I knew the person had done the modifiying, and trusted them to have taken care of the car resonsibly. I'm not sure how things are in the UK, but there are too many people here in the 'states who buy aftermarket mufflers and blowoff valves, but neglect to change the coolant fluid, replace worn accessory belts, have the fuel injectors cleaned, etc...

hi, im new to rx7 scene also and from cardiff, uk too,so nice to meet you!
i have just bought myself an 1993 rx7, and i dont have a clue about them, but am slowly learning.
i have found out that all 3rd gen rx7's are 1.3 twin turbo but on the log book(v5) they do say 2616cc so is not classed under cheap tax!!

anyways all the best in finding yourself an rx!
