Total loss value? (Insurance salvage?)

hey, so got rear endend pretty hard last night in my 93 FD, its looking like it might be a loss. Im curious, those of you that have had your car totaled, what was the payout? i know my local MVD said the car was worth 9500 in terms of taxable value, what about the insurance company? what about aftermarket parts, will insurance cover those?

thanks.

Aftermarket parts etc can be a crap shoot with insurance companies. I will tell you I had a similar event occur with my first FD, where an accident totaled my FD. I let my adjuster know that I was going to be "made whole" from this process as these cars are hard to come by etc etc. I offered to provide him some links to cars in similar condition being sold (most on this forum or autotrader etc) and they went to bat for me HARD.

I forget who, but someone on these boards advised me to use the language "Made Whole" whenever I spoke with any insurance company official (mine or other guys) since the accident wasn't my fault and the other guy was issued a ticket. I don't know if this helped, but it was the beginning of how i ended up with the beauty that I own now.

They usually price out 3 comparable cars in your area currently listed for sale to come up with the value. Make sure they use cars that closely match yours if you think there is extra $ in it for you. I got an additional $1500 a few years back on a Nissan 240 by making them price out only manual trans cars and throw out all the cheap automatics they tried to use at first.

I just had the opportunity to spend time with two different insurance companies in the last 60 days. What worked for me was very similar to the above:

1) I pulled comparable prices to the make/model of my car. I included links and put them into a document.

2) All aftermarket equipment that was damaged had pictures and links in the same documents to the prices of those new.

In both cases, the insurance adjusters from two different companies, placed the value of my 93 Base Model with stripped interior (I was doing wiring) at $15,000.

In both cases it should be noted I was very polite to the adjuster, figured out if they actually knew anything about the car (one did, one did not) and then politely offered to answer any questions but mentioned I would stay out of their way otherwise.

I was quite pleased with what I received in both instances.

just to add to this...I found that with my FC I had to play the patience game...and sometimes you might have to get the lawyers involved.

Yep be polite and let them know exactly what you want and that YOU know what you are doing, find comparable cars in the area and prices.

My father just had his 64 F100 rear ended pretty bad, the insurance tried to total it out at $3500, now they are fixing it as it is actually valued closer to $35000. They sent him a new tailgate that looked like ***, he rejected it and is waiting on a better one and won't settle for less. Be patient and don't settle on the first offer thrown at you.

You are entittled for fair market price. As others have said: Do your research on what other FD's in your area (with our cars the area can span a few states) and submit them to the insurance company.

I just recently wrecked my FD, needless to say it was a total loss and I got 14g back. But yours could be different because there are barely any rx7 where I live.
