the symptoms your descibing dont sound like the map sensor...unless your are also having odd colored smoke pouring out your exhaust? if so, its your map sensor

your high idol could most definitly be a vacuum leak, but im not sure about why your car dies after the idol spike...

If you pulled the motor there are countless possible connections that could have been missed and cause your problems.

Do you have any ECU codes?

PLEASE tell us you carefully marked every wire and hose (especially the vacuum hoses) and took good digital photos of your disassembly.....?

Because like Dave says, there are COUNTLESS ways to make a minor mistake when re-connecting everything.
About all you can do is to take off enough stuff to get to your rat's nest and start tracing everything, making sure it is all hooked up right.

If he just pulled his motor, replaced the clutch and rear main seal and did a vac hose job himself, he should know where the Map sensor is located. Otherwise he's in a world of hurt. A search will turn up lots of info on the map sensor and possibly some pics.

The black piece under the map sensor is a filter, so yes you should be able to move air thru it in both directions. It has an arrow so you can keep track of the 'clean' side.
