I just got my driveshaft shop axles in yesterday and have started the install but i can't get the axle nut off. I'm wondering what the best process was for this or if anyone has any tips.

Also, does anyone have a write up on the axles swap process, i swear someone wrote one at some point, but the search isn't turning up ****.

 

A socket, a breaker bar and a 3 foot length of pipe are what I use. Have a second person hold the brakes while you bust the nut loose.

 

Well, i've got all that, i guess i just need to put some elbow grease into it. Thanks for your reply. What is the best way to pull that part thats dented in (the locking part of the nut)?

 

Zinx the dented part wont stop it from comming of that is to help keep it from just unscrewing if it were loose. A 600 ft pound air gun works good on the nut if you have one. And there was a write up somewere. Good luck.

 

I think I used a screwdriver or small chisel for that part and straightened it out.

Also, if you cant get the nut off, drive to a local tire shop, have them loosen with an air gun for you and then retighten. Once you get home from there, it will be easy to get off again.

My rechargeable impact gun (250 ft/lbs) blew it right off. The factory torque spec is about 175-200 ft/lbs i believe.

I just used a scrw driver to tap ou the dented portion of the nut.

 

Sounds like the best way, but IF they will do that for you, since they probably don't want to be liable. The other way is a good 1/2" impact gun and socket or breaker bar like mentioned before, it should come off...if not, something may be wrong, like crossthreaded. If not try spraying some wd40 on it and letting it sit for a little while to help break up any rust.

 

Thats for all the tips guys! Unfortunatly i can't drive it anywhere as the hondabond on the new oil pan is still curing, but thats a good idea. The socket i have a a 3/4" drive and my impact is a 1/2" unless i can find someone with a 3/4" that i can borrow, i guess i could find a reducer as well. I'll get it off one way or the other.

 

And just to be sure, they are a standard, clock-wise to tighten thread, right? I don't want to be going the wrong way on this thing.

 

^ Yep. Threads are completely normal on both sides.

You sons of bitches, you don't even need to take the hub nut off to change axles, of course i already had one off when i realized this. It was kind of a pita, but hopefully worth it, i'll be on some ET streets Saturday to make some passes.

No, some other guys told me the nut had to come off to change the axles. It didn't throw me off that much.
