tips for inspecting 3rd gen

well, i checked the FAQ used car thing and did not see anything for a car with a blown engine...

i've come across a 3rd gen that DOES NOT run, 93, original silver, manual, don't know miles yet, don't know package/options. fully garage kept and still in garage, been sitting for years. i'm going to inspect it in the next couple of weeks.

from my experience working on second gens i know what i'm in for if there's a thrown apex, etc. so i'm bringing a compression tester and some jumper cables. hopefully it's simpler than that, but i feel it's doubtful.

i'm asking you guys if there are some obscure problems i should look out for and could possibly make a point of to reduce the price.

and about what is it worth assuming it has average ~90k miles on it?

they're asking ~5k and said they would compromise if it was going to a nice home. it's not missing anything.

5k sounds like a good deal to me! even with a blown engine. If everything is in tact and good condition, clear title etc... I'd pay that. Sounds like there's some room for nogtiating as-well.
If for some reason you decide not to buy it, will you put me in touch with these people?

yeah, i guess i'm just used to cheap *** second gens... i got my 88 base literally for free... it took a rebuild, transmission conversion, and rear end swap to make it a worthy car tho... and it's still ugly lol.

not that i don't love my 80's mistress.

i went and saw the car today...

93 touring (had my fingers crossed for an R1) silver on black leather interior

i got the price down to $4500 and i would like some feedback from someone with more 3rd generation buying experience than me. keep in mind i can and will do all the work myself.

The GOOD:

- one female owner that kept up with maintainance
- unmodified/unmolested
- original paint in near perfect condition
- good set of bridgestone potenzas with no dry rot (possible flat spots, but it was moved from time to time)
- no frame damage i could see and original body panels
- interior is CHERRY and looks like new... i mean it looked like one with <17k i saw
- no transmission problems (i asked about 5th gear/synchro)

The BAD:

- 125,XXX miles
- one rotor supposedly gave a 2 on the mazda tester when they brought it in, she didn't remember which one it was and exactly what they said... probably the rear
i'm thinking thrown apex or possibly carbon lock because she said it sat for 3 months and then wouldn't start again... it does turn over
- turbos need to be rebuilt and were leaking oil

so whad'ya guys think?

Ya, that shell is easily worth that. You're just a rebuild away from perfection.

If that car was for sale out here in Southern California, it would sell in a heartbeat for $5,000. If you're serious, dont hesitate to buy it. You'll have a nice FD for under 10k once its running.
