Time to buy a downpipe

Can anyone tell me which is best?

Corksport
Bonez
Pettit
SR Motorsports
Mazdatrix?
HKS (not staineless)

Costs range from $200 - $400.
Is there any difference?
or should I just get the best deal?

Also, do I need a new turbo/downpipe gasket, or can I re-use mine?

Do all of these have a bung for EGT and/or O2 sensors?

I know I'm a nub. Help me out.

Bonez on ours; had to exchange it once because there was no wrench clearance for the lower rear mounting bolt (stud/nut not possible in that location). Looked like the flange was offset relative to the pipe, on the first one. Second one was fine; no problems so far with it.

HKS(Cast Upper)

The HKS will have the best seal, because of its cast upper portion.

If your worried about rust, get it JETHOT coated.

You can pick up a HKS DP for around 125-150, spend the extra money on the thermal coating.

Most any downpipe will treat you well. I'd look for a used one, they're easy to find used. I just sold a Bonez downpipe for $75 shipped.

Get a used one and send it off to Jet-Hot for their 2000 degree ceramic coating. The coating is bulletproof and makes a big difference in engine bay temps. Also, if your used one is nasty/rusty looking, they will totally clean it up before they coat it so it looks brand new when you get it.

The Ebay downpipes are crap for fit and finish, I'd avoid those.

HKS is super easy to install, the way the head is designed it's real easy to get to the fasteners and work with.

Any way you'll have a winner, it's a great mod for the FD.

I've had my Pettit dp and cat-back for 10+ years, they make a very good product. Agree with the ceramic coating comment. I also agree you can get good deals on pipes in the parts section.

I was wondering about this myself if there was much difference in down pipes in terms of gains. I does seem that a lot of people are recommending the HKS though. Anyone know if there has been dyno testing on popular pipes for the FD3S?

HKS FTW. oem like fitment, cheap(used), bullet proof, easy to work with.

you can always coat it with any heat treatment of your choice. once you get one make sure you add secondary bung for the WB sensor before installing it.

any muffler shop will weld one for you for about 20 bones.

Whatever you do, don't skimp on the new gasket. They're not dirt cheap, but imagine getting everything back together only to find you have an exhaust leak (of super hot gases.)
A fresh gasket only makes sense.

+1 on HKS. I bought a used one and had it ceramic coated. Install was easy and performance gains were noticible. It's been two years and I've been very pleased with it!

I have a Bonez downpipe which is coated:

If I were buying today, I'd track down the Knightsports dual-pipe downpipe.

I've got one .

Got a STEAL on it off Ebay a while back, had it Jet-Hot coated of course. I had a Bonez downpipe before that, and actually did notice a significant performance boost with it.

The fit of the downpipe is so-so, though. The holes for the 4 studs on the turbo are a little large, so it doesn't really go into the same place every time you install it. I have to mess with mine actually, it's cocked upwards just a few degrees making for a small exhaust leak between it and the highflow cat.

In the downpipe's defense, I did buy it used, so the previous owner may have beat the hell out of it or something. Also, the flange to the midpipe is pretty thin material and was bent when I got it.

But, it sure is pretty. Too bad they're like $1200 new (ack!) and about impossible to find used.
