Ticking noise while engine is idleing. What could this be?

I am looking at a 94 (5speed). My dad said he heard a ticking noise that sounded like the noise valves make when they are tapping (obviously not valves but its a good description). Is this an exhaust leak or is it normal? What else could it be?

Thanks,
-Charlie

I think my power steering pump started ticket before it seized.

Just listen around and try to figure out where it's coming from. If it's just at idle, I suppose it could be the airpump..

Aiiiiirpump. Disconnect the connector for a few seconds and see if it goes away. Don't leave it off or you'll ruin your cat, but a few seconds won't hurt.

Cool Use a stethoscope...

...if you want to specifically know where it's coming from find a 2' to 3' piece of hose and put one side to your ear and the other near or around the ticking noise. You shouldn't have anything ticking, it's a fairly smooth motor. If it is the air pump, it should not be ticking constantly. If it is a constant ticking noise, more than likely it's going to be a relay, possibly not grounded properly. Good luck.

If it is a ticking I would not worry about it. If it is more of a whacking that diminishes as the car revs, I would walk away from this car. That is the symptom mine had right before it threw a corner seal.

You must find out where it's coming from. MANY things under the hood can make a ticking sound.

IF all else fails..

Start your car at night and look into your engine bay..
It may be a bad spark plug boot. Spark arching to
the Upper Intake Manifold.

I had similar issue. For me was a bad wire.

goodluck

Does the ticking speed rise with engine RPM?
Mine was a leaky exhaust manifold gasket. Sounds like it's right under the airpump. You could smell it if it was.
