Thoughts on turbo abraidable seals?

Hi there,

Just been speaking to a company about reconditioning of the turbo pack. I got onto the subject regarding the abraidable seals found on some of the 99-02 FDs. Reading the stuff Mazda say about the seals, they give better sealing and improve efficiency. This guy said that is not really true in the real world. Maybe on a test bed under idealised conditions, but in reality, he reckoned he has never seen any drop in performance after reconditioning turbos with abraidable seals (including Toyotas, Subaru's). When the turbos are cleaned up, the abraidable sealing comes away (and isn't replaced).

So, does anyone agree with this? Are abraidable seals more of a marketing gimmick, rather than a tool to truely improve a turbo's performance?

Cheers!
