for those who have blown apex seals...do these symptoms sound right??

if ya wanna hear the whole nasty story read my thread about xs engineering. if not..move down..any input is appreciated.

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...5&pagenumber=1

I get spark to all plugs and wires

I remapped my ecu with the houston 2 maps after getting burned with some bad maps from xs.

my symptoms are tremendous amounts of black smoke like crazy out the exhaust...some blue (which I cant tell if its just startup smoke)........and lots of shaking.

I removed the plugs and turned it over to hear compression...tst tst tst tst..very very even...it does not sound like it misses...it sounds like first one rotor then another...nice and even. no scraping noises...no metal on metal...no ceramic grinding around....

it IDLES...very rough at 800 rpms. it does not need pressure on the accellerator to idle. It idles on its own. If I flutter the accellerator the car shakes badly and smoke bellows out the exhaust.

the plugs are very wet with fuel...they turn black after just one minute idling...

what do you think>?????

input is greatly appreciated.

Hey Jason, did you try swapping in a stock ECU to check the idle?

Is it hard to turn over when you start it (very hesitant)? I experienced all of the symptoms you are when my apex blew, minus the smoke.

- My car idled on it's own at around 700rpm
- It shook like a stripper shown a 50
- Ran well ih higher rpms...even pulled pretty hard

The only way to tell for sure is checking compression. I made the same mistake by assuming that a strong/even tst tst tst meant that my apexes weren't blown...they were. Get the numbers, it's the only way to be sure.

Unhappy Sorry Man but...

sound like you've eaten a seal.

Do the following while checking your boost gauge: Put car into gear and very slowly ease out the clutch until the car wants to "just slightly" lurch forward. You will most likely see the gauge bounce with the loss of compression on the rotor face; however, I didn't with my motor because I ate all 3 seals! If this yields nothing then run a compression test.

That sucks Man....

It just sounds to me like you are running PIG rich, XS probably screwed up somewhere on the maps and tried to place it safe since they were not dyno tuning.. they just put in too much fuel. Who knows what damage if any was done, I read your other thread and it is obvious who is to blame since the ECU remap is the only thing that changed. You can definitely damage a motor by running it with too much fuel, but I think you may be ok.. check all the documents from XS and make sure you didn't sign a waiver that releases them from any blame. I know if you dyno tune there you have to sign a waiver so if they blow your motor they are not to blame.. anything is possible with a good lawyer though I suppose.

well boys..heres the deal.

it wasnt just rich...it was bent over and shoved right up my tailpipe! it was rich and lean...both...settings all farked..you name it they blew it.

my map was a non seq map and I have sequential twins. it was way lean down low and I could have ruined my apex seals...and my new turbos...and my new housings...

the pim setting was wrong. entirely wrong. this was the cause of the smoke and rumbling.

I was getting detonation on the xs maps when I finally boosted it. bad detonation at one point. It was the detonation that led me to speak with jason at the store and he suggested dumping the xs settings. his suggestion worked. I did not damage my motor. It still sings! Compression is fine.

I could have blown my motor...thankfully it is in working condition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I called xs and let them have it. I expect to hear from them as I want an explanation. they totally dropped the ball by not even reading my damn mod list again...at least that is how I assume that I ended up with the wrong settings for the second time. thankfully I was smart enuff to get on the boards to get help from all of you.

many thanks to GMONSON and SPYFISH especially. these guys both know their stuff...and were very kind to me.

on the contrary, my car ran like **** and xs would not help me...when I told them the symptoms they said "well I dont understand why it would do that??"

NICE!...

whatever.

I reset the ecu and tuned it with louis at rotary reliability. it runs better today then it has with any of their **** maps.

also..thanks to jason at the rx store who was very patient in helping me. xs owes him a thanks for cooling me off before I called them.

brett and brian at m2 did some great advice giving and listening as well.

what I learned is that some people care...and others do not. to those that do..thanks

Ill putt around now happily until I get it on the dyno. Its running nice and smooth.

til then...Im all smiles.

j

PS it is absolutely not an option for those interested in tuning their car do do it thru the mail or over the friggen phone. beware.

Artguy, glad to hear your motor and turbos are alright. Too bad XS dropped the ball like that. Good luck getting your car tuned the right way. Let us know how the tuning goes with the datalogit. I'll be very wary of my tuning now as well. Thanks for the input.
