For those with failed rebuilds...

I posted this poll in the Rotary Tech section, but that forum seems to be closed for some reason.

The question was...

If you have had a rebuilt engine fail prematurely, what was the reason it failed? Who remanufactured it? And did they make it right?

2 bad sets of Atkins seals. Upon heatup the seals seized in their slots making a no compression engine.

Aktins' new stuff has a different coefficient of expansion than OEM and they did not tell the builder who slotted the rotors to OEM spec. No help from Atkins. Essentially said that the builder was at fault for not letting them mill the rotors to their spec.

My builder ate the cost of both rebuilds and I bless him daily for my new engine.

hayes rebiult my motor, 1,500 mile break-in, changed oil every 500 miles, didnt take it over 4k until 1k miles(I didnt boost it over 5 psi until 1500), and the damn motor is burning oil. It took me while to except this fact though.. This motor was a warrantied motor that they had to rebiuld before, and Im not paying 600 bucks for shipping so they can **** up agian. I dont care what anybody says about hayes, I wouldnt trust them for ****. It pisses me off so much, i think Im just going to blow MF up friday on the dyno( 25 psi), just to say I dont have a hayes engine. Hayes engines suck!!!

I can't add my TII engine failure to the poll because this is 3rd gen specific and you can only vote once (so I voted to warn you all about my experience with Atkins). I just wanted to let you know about the coolant seal failure I had in that engine. The builder of my TII engine is the same saint that rebuilt my 3rd gen. (see above).

The TII rebuild failed from coolant seal failure after 100K of being whipped and beaten daily.:whipped: You should know that it still starts every time you turn the key and can sit and idle forever but as soon as you start driving it the temp raises and within 5 minutes approaches the "red zone".

I never babied that car like I do the FD. Seriously---I would never stay out of the boost and crammed it through every turn. Now I didn't abuse it either, I changed oil/filter every 2000, I never overboosted it, never overheated it until the seal went, and carefully watched the EGTs. With a total of 180K on the frame it has been sold to my engine builder who is going to completely rebuild the car for the street/autocross circuit.

I just can't complain about that kind of failure(?).

Who was that masked man who rebuilt your engines - you never said. If he is that good and is giving you that great a service perhaps we should all know him.

I can understand that you may not want to mention his name because you already have said some less than flattering things about his supplier.

But if he is willing to be known, I would like to know who he is for when my RX needs a new pump.

Thanks for the question but Yup I did. I even tested that original (the boiling water test) and two others. I even went so far as to finally remove the thermostat altogether hoping that it wasn't what it was. . . but it was and now it is history.

To all others-----Jeff has given a great example of being sure the little things are checked before you decide your life is over. Sure sometimes it is over but often it is just something that takes a quick fix. Another example of a little thing that sound like your engine is destined for an early grave is when the vacuum hose to the map sensor disconnects while you are boosting like crazy.

Garfinkle had a motor from Hayes that failed with a bad bearing after only 68 miles . They replaced it including shipping . The replacement is still running strong .
