you can use optima battery if you don't mind the weight. One thing is sure, you need a dry battery.

for the wire, use gauge 0. Two choices, stereo wire (expensive) or welder wire (a lot cheaper). I personnaly put welder wire, it even looked stronger. Just put a plastic shield around the wire, a shield that you can find in any good car stereo shop.

Might want to make a pretty deep cut into the paint, you need a really good ground for safety's sake.

I used a Optima yellow top w/ a 2 guage gold plated stereo wire (expensive!). Make sure you use a good fuse with it as well.

I have a Hawker Genisis, behind the driver's seat, with a 200-amp Phoenix Gold circuit breaker for easy battery shut-off. The circuit breaker also reduces the chances of an electrical fire in the event that the battery cable is pinched and cut in a wreck and is mounted within 12 inches of the positive terminal of the battery.

I used 2-gauge Phoenix Gold cable and ran it along the wiring channel beside the door, behind the driver's kick panel, and out through the rubber grommet that is behind the driver's side front wheel well liner. It passes over the top of the wheel and enters the engine compartment right next to the main battery distribution bar.

The battery is grounded with 2-gauge cable to an existing bolt hole that was ground clean of paint. Clear silicone was then gooped over the bolt and clean metal to inhibit oxidation.

To Jimlab,

Which model Hawker Genesis do you use? What kind of life (years) are you getting? Any particular reason why you chose the Genesis over the Odyssey?

I'd have to check to get the model number, but the general dimensions are about 7" wide, 6" deep and about 5" tall, off the top of my head.

I've had the Hawker for over 4 years and it has exceptional holding capacity. I haven't driven my car since May of '98 and in that time, with all the testing I've done on wiring, lighting, stereo, running the windows up and down, cycling the fuel pump to turn over the tank (have since just emptied it), and so on, I've only charged it once, and not because it was dead, but because the windows were slow to raise.

I never had any problems whatsoever with it while the car was in use, and it never failed to start the engine in the first few revolutions. Choof-choof-choo-blaaaaa-blaaaaa-blaa-blaaaaaa-blaaaaa (starting compression and non-sequential noises)

The Genesis was "the" battery to get at the time, which is the only reason I chose it. I didn't do any comparison shopping, but have absolutely no regrets and no plans to replace it.

I used a Optima Red top (I run the fans for a loooong time after the car is shut off when I am at the track) For you guys looking for battery cable and dont; want to waste money on super high grade stero cable (overkill IMO) I used cable from Summit Racing - a Taylor Vertex battery relocation kit for about $40, [which included 16 feet of red 2 gauge wire, 3 feet of black negative 2 gauge (both with battery terminals already attached), a battery tray, battery hold downs, and tray mounting hardware] I wouldn't use anything less than 2 gauge...if you have the $$$'s then why not 0 gauge but I don't think it's necesary. As noted also it is imperative you install a fuse or breaker *no more* than 12 inches from the pos. battery terminal. I used a Blue Sea Marine ANL fuse holder with a 150Amp ANL blade fuse, fuse and holder only $40.

Crispy

As I stated above...

"The circuit breaker also reduces the chances of an electrical fire in the event that the battery cable is pinched and cut in a wreck and is mounted within 12 inches of the positive terminal of the battery."

If the battery cable, which now runs the length of the car to behind the driver's seat, is pinched or cut in a wreck, sparks can result from the short circuit which can start a fire. The circuit breaker protects by kicking out and opening the circuit (cutting power) when resistance on the circuit reaches a given point.

A starter can draw enough current to kick out a 140-amp breaker with extended cranking (like for a compression test), and therefore I use a 200-amp breaker. More than enough to keep the circuit live for all occasions, but will kick out in the event that the battery positive terminal is shorted to ground.

A circuit breaker is used because it's a handy shut-off device and doesn't have to be replaced, like a fuse. You just close the latch and the circuit is active again.

Just with a standard battery tray or box. Typically the bottom of the bin is cut out so the battery is mounted to the chassis but opening the bin allows access to it.

I have the Oddysey PC925MJ (Metal Jacket) 925ca 470cca 6.7L 7.1W 5.1H 24lbs. It is mounted in the drivers rear bin. I removed the metal jacket from the battery and mounted it to the car and siliconed the battery back in. I ran 4 guage wire from the front of the car along underneath the car to an existing hole that was plugged with a rubber grommet, then up into the car and attached to the battery. I grounded the battery using one of the stock rear seatbelt holes with 4 gauge wire.
