Thinking of selling...

Well I have been troubleshooting my 7 for 10 months now and I am now so tired of tinkering on the car only to not have it run right. Everything in the car is new, the turbo's are 99 efini's, motor was built by Pineapple Racing, I have every bolt on you can buy, fluidyne, ACT 9.5 lb flywheel, RPS carbon-carbon clutch, and a million others but anyways Im just sooo over these cars, with about 4 years and $30,000 grand in mods and the car still wont run right, I think im ready to start researching other means for horsepower...

What is wrong with it? I have a single Turbo with a street port and daily drive it at about 14psi. For the most part it has been very reliable.

Who did all the mechanical work, you or a shop? How exactly is it not "running right"?

Well, I have done most of the work besides building the motor. Well actually me and a friend of mine who races his 7 and whom is very knowledgable of the cars. He is one of those kinda guys that you can ask any question of about these cars and he could tell you the answer. So for he and I to both be stumpped is rediculous. Im not totally sure I want to sell the car but im really frustrated with the car at this time. I have spent a rediculous amount of time and money on the exterior, interior, and motor and turbo work on this vehicle only for it to not peform correctly. In the process of rebuild the motor I did all of the reliablility mod's, and made sure to basically replacing everything with new components rather than be cheap and just throw the original parts back on the car.
The things that I am referring to are such as new oil injectors and lines, new rotors and housings, stage 2 oil mod's from PIneapple, new 99 efini turbo's, ACT 9.5 lb flywheel, RPS carbon-carbon clutch, 20b pump, M2 down pipe, M2 ecu, fluidyne radiator, flowed and matched injectors by Marren fuel injection, Pettit intake setup, Greddy bov, timer, C's short shifter, polished aluminum intake pipes, greddy exhaust, random cat, boost-water-and oil temp. gauges, new plugs with every oil change, magnecore 10mm. wires, silicone vac. lines, greddy pulley kit, new ground straps, new coil harness, leading and trailing coil packs, and probably more stuff but you get the idea.
The way the car does not run right is that it has a great boost pattern, has no unordinary oil or water consumption, idles great even without airpump, runs with good temperatures, but the car comes out of the hole strong like through 1st and 2nd gear but then falls on its face. The car does not loose boost it just does not keep pulling. But, after the transition it pulls like gangbusters, I guess you could say that I basically loose all my mid-range power when accelerating under heavy load. But, this also happens under light load as well. For instance I can cruise at 3000 rpm's in 3rd gear and tip-in but the car will not pull hard like it should. At 3000 rpms in 3rd gear in an rx7 when you tip-in you should be hauling ***. Anyways thats my story and thanks for any advice.....

You say the car will not pull below transition but you have a good boost pattern -- ie, you make 10+ psi from 2800 rpm or so until transition?

Where are you monitoring boost from?

And you're getting a solid 10+ psi from ~2800 rpm until transition? And then you have solid boost after transition? It pulls after transition but not before?

sounds like a vaccum hose issue... you sure you didnt just cross something up? could also be a relay or even something like a check valve... boost issues are hard to pinpoint, but simple to fix (usually)

Nope, I dont hink it is a boost leak or switch up because my pattern is solid. I have no problem with the boost falling off. The pattern is a solid 11-10-11 on my car there is just no pull in the mid-range of the powerband.

If you really want to troubleshoot the car, stick it on a dyno. If you are making boost, but you aren't getting the power to the wheels, it will show.

That's what I recommend. Let a shop troubleshoot the car, and get it back to you in tip-top shape. After all the mods and hard work, it would be a shame to sell the car

exactly

what if the problem was soo minor? then you sold the car (def losing money in the sale) and the person who bought it is throwing a party cause of all the goodies you bought, prob spent a nickel and dime finding and fixing your problem and now you are out of a nice car and ALOT of money..

I really dont think I want to sell the car Im just very frustrated with the car as of right now. I realize that when I do finally find the problem it will probably be something simple. And I know it would be stupid to have done so much with this car and never see the end result. I just got off the phone with Dale Clark a well known member here and he put it in a neat perspective, He said its kinda like a good book, it may be quite long and sometimes have you on edge but no matter what you want to finish the book to see what the end result may be. I believe im going over to Pensacola next Sunday to troubleshoot the car with Dale, he is an awesome guy and quite knowledgable of these cars, hopefully we can pinpoinot the issue at hand. Thanks everyone for you help and support in my ongoing "Love-Hate" relationship with my 7!

making a certain boost level doesn't mean you don't have a boost leak.
If you have a boost leak, your turbos will boost till it reaches its boost
level, but out of efficiency. Which it will feel like its under powered, and etc.

have you tried going non sequential? btw check your y pipe connection

No I dont think I would care to do the non-sequential setup. I will double check the y-pipe to make sure it is secure. Thanks for your input Slingshot....

DVSseven,

Dale offered to look at the car before, why not see if you can take him up on his offer? No offense, but it seems like *if* there is a problem, it's something that's outside of the scope of what you can troubleshoot. That's not a problem, there are a lot of things I (and many others) can't toubleshoot ourselves on these cars.

Take the car to Dale or Pettit. Show them what's happening and then see if there really is a problem and if they can find a solution.

Yeah, I think as long as everything goes as planned I will be cruising over to Pensacola this Sunday to troubleshoot the car with Dale. I know he is quite knowledgeable of these cars, and I pray that we at least locate the problem or fix it. I guess we will see this weekend. Thanks everyone...
