Thinking of selling......

I want a few opinions from you all.....

I've had my fd for about 2 months, I've had a lot of fun with it. But in my previous vehicle, not this one, I recieved 3 points on my licence. This car is costing me $350 a month for payments and $550 a month for insurance. Thats $900 a month for a car.

Insurance, payments, plus the cost of maintence and upgrading, it all adds up. Previous to buying I was aware of the maintenence costs to keep the vehicle up and I have been introduced to the addiction of upgrading and adding new stuff.

Would it be a wise decision to sell? I mean I love my car to death and all but, I think I could sell it and buy something nice, at least until I have more money to throw around.....

Its a 94 black touring, 92,xxx miles on the odometer, recent turbo rebuild about 8 months ago, only about 12,000 miles on rebuilt motor.

It has upgraded intake, apexi n1 exhaust, downpipe, apexi ecu with pfc, hks type 1 turbo timer, pettit AST, msd wires, ACT street/strip clutch, B&M shortshifter, and a few other things that I mentioned in my sig. This is easily a 12.x car depending on driver and boost settings. Im sure I could probably sell for at least 16k-17k....

Just some opinions.... thanks in advance.

By the way, I am 19 years old and I have a steady job, I'm sure that will be a factor when you give input. I do live on my own and am completely dependent on myself also.........

$550/month for insurance!! **** a car, you need a bicycle. Damn, I would never pay $550/month for insurance unless it was for like 3-4 cars. Call around and get another insurance company. There was a post a few months back on insurance, check it out and see if you can't find a cheaper place to get insurance. I pay $92/month for full coverage and I am 21 with 2 speeding tickets on my record.

Dude. You're going to loose big money if you sell it now. Honestly you paid too much for the car. If you fixed the handfull of things that are needing on the car ( you know) you would get more money if you still want to sell. Try another ins. co. as well or lower some of the coverages you have. I was paying about $1200 a year with two points and two cars. Or just sell it and wait untill you have a better record.

How long till you turn 25 or get married (not knowing either, I can't assume anything)? Insurance drops quickly at either of those two points in your life.

Sounds like your primary systems (engines and turbos) should last a while if properly maintained, and your payment isn't extreme. So, if you are concerned about the money but approaching a "good insurance price drop" age, you may want to keep the 7.

I'm a realist at heart and I don't make decisions without taking reality into account (and my wife checks the numbers, and she controls the numbers...).

If you are near an insurance drop point, call you insurance agent and see what your rates will be at that time.

Otherwise, if it's too much money, why kill yourself. Plan on getting one in the future.

A problem I see selling is that the age of the rebuilds and the mods probably don't add a lot to the value (unless you find the right person to sell to). I think your price estimate is right in line with what you could get (I just bought one after looking at about ten of them, and AZ isn't that far from CA...), and if that's satisfactory from a financial perspective, selling is certainly an option.

about the insurance, do you have the 7 listed as your primary car? (my understanding is that you have another car, the other one you got the tickets in)...if you do have 2 cars, list the FD as your secondary car or pleasure car or whatever it's called. that should help drop the insurance.

Upon getting this car I sold my other. This is my primary, and only, car. I am not going to turn 25 soon (being that I'm 19) and I dont plan on getting married any time sooner than I turn 25.

I can afford all this, keep that in mind, I am a manager of sales at my job, but I just dont want to spend all this extra money on a car that is expensive, but shouldnt be this expensive. I guess I should have just been more careful earlier in my driving career.

This is the LOWEST insurance I have found. Its financed so I MUST have full coverage, I'm 19, no good driver discount, no student discount, and its a high performance, high risk car, thus the high insurance.

I think I'll be better off with a Mercedes for now.... I dont know what to do.....

550 is a shat load for insurence, I was quoted at 201 a month by state farm, I am also 19. But I havn't done anything wrong on the road, or at least gotten caught. Well ther was the time I got caught doing 93 in a 55, but the lawyer took care of that...not on the record , turned it down a notch since then.....but i'd keep it, if nothing else store it until you can afford it

I really do like being on my own so there is no way I am moving back in with my parents. I pay about $1050 for rent I just got a new house so its going to be pretty nice....

I just gotta pay the bills and stuff that goes along with a house such as power, cable, water, DSL, and so on. Plus things like cell phone, credit cards, and other stuff like that.

I mean I do have the money but I think I'd be able to have a lot more fun with tons of spending money versus just my car, for now anyway. I mean I am having the time of my life with the 7 but I am scared of myself as a driver too, I find myself from time to time going 120, 130, and even 140 MPH! I'd rather be safe than sorry, at least until I learn (the easy way, not the hard way) that its probably better off if i dont kill myself with this car.

Sell your car and put that $550 to some better use. If you really love the RX-7, buy another one after you turn 21 or 25. Any tickets will have dropped off your record and that will also make a huge difference. Or if your really in love with the rotary buy a nice used 2nd Gen convertible which insuring should be a lot cheaper.

I know there's a lot of love for the car, but that is absolutely ridiculous. When I was 26, I was married and my total insurance for the RX-7 and my wife's car was $180.

Just think about it. $550 a year for 3 years (you'll be 22) you'd have enough to pay for an FD in cash and probably a new motor at the same time, or possibly put a huge down payment on the next generation 7.

Just from an older persons perspective (I hate admitting that), but I was in your shoes before, and it's not worth it. You should be looking for a car where you can insure for $100. You've posted the question, so you know that at least the smart, financial side of your brain is speaking to you on this.

Your young, so I think you will miss the car, but the fun can be had else where for that amount of money. Not that your a bad driver, but you'll be more experienced later and less likely to wreck your dream car (again, speaking from experience on this, I wrecked my first car).
