Thinking of buying a 94

The car seems to be in good condition and has very low mileage - 65000 Kilometers (45K Miles)

One problem I am coming up against is that it sometimes backfires when you down shift really quick or rev high immediately. I have tried searching and going through all the FAQs, but cannot seem to find anything that would give me a good insight as to what kind of problem this could be.

perfectly normal for backfiring. you did not search well, nor have you read many threads on this.

Again thank you. I will do more research on the car before I ask any more unnecessary questions.

It is just that I have never encountered a car that backfired as part of its normal running procedure.

btw 65k is not low mileage for an fd as 80k'ish seems to be the magic rebuild number. What mods have been done and what is asking price is a more appropriate inquiry..all else is a matter of negotiation. Mine backfires like a biotch "cat back w/dp"...used to freak me out all the time. Now I know it's around 25k when she's cold and if I blip the throttle she'll rattle off like a machine gun and really cheese the neighbors. muahahahaha

good luck. Shoot for the silver one in Toronto with 12,000 miles previously owned by the Mazda exec...sweet car!!! Almost bought it myself until I found a killer deal on a red 93.

Which is actually 45,000 miles. If he was like me, that wouldnt be very much, considering I would only drive it a few thousand miles a year.

Mods are fairly extensive though all are bolt-ons.

Aftermarket intercooler and piping
BoV
Turbo Timer
Some sort of Digital Boost management
Aftermarket Intake and Exhaust

I could probably grab the car for around 18 thousand Canadian.

I did not realize that rotaries had such a short life span.

most stock fd rx7s will run over 100,000 miles before needing a new motor.

i recall reading 120,000, even read of 150,000 miles on an automatic fd belonging to one cincyrx7 guy.

the sleepr1 person has 102,600 miles on his and it's still running...though i read a new motor is coming for his/her car? i believe sleepy is some sort of circuit track driver? even has a club mdg motorsports driving group?

most 13b rews blow up because their owners don't know how to modify them correctly. biggest problem is heat and lean conditions in the air-fuel-ratios.

45k heh guess I should learn to read. lol who did what before is the real key...I am a "plan for the worse case" guy. my car had 75k---miles heh. Was bone stock with a complete set of papers and an oil pan gasket leak. Compression was great. I hope to get 150 miles out of my motor--with sleepr1s help of course--he is getting a new motor as we speak...not cause he had to but because compresssion was low and he wants a track monster.

I looked at a lot of modified cars only to dig out of the guy that the only reason "this" was replaced was beacause they broke it at the drag strip....or "adult owned" ment "since my car thrashing teenager went to school."

those mods would make me nervouse as they are "power mods" not reliability mods. the toughest question for me was always...these mods cost this much money...that I wouldn't have to spend to get them.....the exhaust and intercooler alone is probably $2k american. 18k canadian sounds like a decent price. It would probably be $16k american for a car of similar ilk...although gotta tack on a grand for being a 94. You go dude, welcome to the family!!

got my 93 touring for $12k american fyi

The car also has exterior modifications like wheels and a slight body kit. It is a sharp looking car.

My only concern is that I have bene accepted to a number of law schools and wish to attend starting September. At that point I would probably have to sell the car. What I am afraid of is something major going before I start school and me having to put my education on hold for a year or two because I wanted a really cool toy.
This car has also have an oil pan leak which was fixed by the current owner. The rest of the mods were done by previous owners. He assures me that he never abuses the car though I certainly take that with a grain of salt.

sell the car and go to that prominent law school.

after your jd and 5 years of practice with a prominent law firm, you can buy a porsche gt2.

dump the fd rx7 while you have the chance. it's a money pit!

that's what i'd do!

Well now thats not what I wanted to hear. Thank you though. I take it you think that the chances of something going on it in 9 months are fairly good?

Especially with my flexible moral structure.

Ok, if I choose to take the risk regardless of your very reasonable advice, is a purchasing price of about 12K US a good deal for this car? As in could I sell it in a year for no loss or even a profit?

if the car has aem ic and intake, open exhaust, with only a boost controller, walk away.

the current owner has not modded the car properly by adding appropriate fuel.

the car needs an apexi power fc, or some sort of fuel management system to perform reliably.

if the owner is running more than 10 psi of boost on the stock ecu, he's run lean, and you will blow the motor up sooner than later.

you will be a statistic.

many fd owners have failed motors from improper engine tuning.

Got some pictures of the car in question. Excuse the system, the audiophile in me would rip it out as soon as I got it.

All comments appreciated:

$12K US is a very good deal for a car with those mods and mileage, assuming everything is in good condition. As far as getting your money back out of it.... don't forget about the hidden costs, like tax, title, license, insurance, etc. You probably won't be able to recover that, but you should be able to easily resell it for at least $12K.

If I were you, I would NOT buy it if you only plan to keep it for 9 months. It's just not worth the hassle to sell it, especially if you need to do so to go to school. My advice is to save you money and concentrate on school.

The summer before I got my bachelor's degree, I bought a new truck for about $22K US, knowing that I had enough money saved to make the payments for my last year of school. And once I graduated and got a job, the payments would not be a problem. Well, during the fall semester I decided that I wanted to go to graduate school, and I could not afford the truck payment in grad school. So I had to sell the truck, and lost some money on it.

I guess all I'm trying to say is, if the car will keep you from going to school, don't do it.

Though I'm generally pretty good at picking up sarcasm, I can't quite tell. Are you being genuine? Or do you think its a rather ugly specimen?

subwoofers? tv screens? cheap bling bling wheels? those don't belong on a sports car. honda civic maybe, but not an fd rx7

walk away my attourney friend...

The car looks fine.

Personally, I'm not a stereo person myself, so that would turn me off from the car (plus the rear seats).

But it depends on what you are looking for.. As far as the engine and the rest of the car, it looks fine.
