Thinking about this one, what do you think?

I'm getting somewhat serious about finally buying an FD. There are two at a Honda dealership near Chicago. Here's a link to one.
http://www.cars.com/search/used/cc/s...true&src=&cid=

One is a 1994, new engine and 1 year Mazda Warranty, 77,000 miles, about 19,000. The other is a 1993, near perfect, 44,000 miles, $21,000. I'm sure they'd come down maybe $1-2,000.

Anybody know anything about these two specific cars or have an opinion on price, assuming I can get $2,000 knocked off what they are asking?

I would say, what are your constraints? Do you HAVE to purchase from a dealer or can you buy private owner? Do you need it TODAY or can you hold out a month or 3? What are your performance goals, or do you wish to have something bone stock forever? Collector or driver? For *my* money there is a white pep for sale - in Chicago no less! - that I would rather, but that is my opinion.

My advice to you is to figure out what goals you wish to attain with the car and wait for the right car to show up at the right price from a private owner who's cared and loved the car, with records and any mods that you already want. Unless you're money bags, you can save the 8.75% sales tax and just pay the $25 or so in use tax when you register the car.

(FWIW I've purchased 2 cars from that dealership, paid above market value for both, cause I was in a frenzied, obsessed state. Both purchases I regretted afterwards, but they were cars that at the time I *HAD* to have.)

Sorry I didn't really answer your question. I believe the street value for the 94 as you've described it is ~15g's. The 1993 is a couple thou more, as it sounds all original and pretty low miles.

I guess my first response was more a cry against dealerships that take cool cars such as these and grossly overcharge for them.

Kensan: Your point is well made about dealers. But that's sort of why I'm interested in the one-year warranty. I'll be financing this through my credit union and yeh, I won't have $3,000 to replace the engine if it goes out in two months. You're 15,000 figure sounds like a good idea. Maybe I'll start the bargaining process at $14,000. Even if we meet at $16,500, that's OK. Those turbos better be in good shape for that sort of money, though.

In general, I have no interest in racing anymore (I'm 50). I'm just interested in preserving the breed and having something to enjoy on the way to work in the morning and heading off into the sunset on the way home. Stock with a few realiability mods would be fine. As the thing wears out, yea, I'll consider a performance exhaust system, and a new paint job. I've driven my 1991 RX-7 14 years now and I plan on driving the next one until I retire. I started out with a new 1983 and drove that one for 8 years, as well.

94-RHD-EFINI-RX7: Your car is sweet, but why do I feel like we're not getting the whole story??? No VIN and I'm led to suspect the good folks at Illinois DMV will be asking some serious questions. LOL. Especially now that they're looking at sending our former governor to jail for possible licensing violations.

If they warrant the cars it may be worth overpaying. To truly decide worth though, trim levels, colors and engine and turbo age may be necessary.

Ah then those cars sound quite suitable for your situation. Good luck! Don't expect them to move too much from their price...give em hell!
