Be sure to use the adjustment under the airpump first. Then use the tensioner. Seems new owners often miss it. Don't overtighten.

bump, cant located this fabled second adjustment by the air pump, belt seems like it needs about another inch and the altenator wont drop the last little bit for some reason.
Strange that the manual wouldnt have anything about it in the belt changing section

If I remember right, the adjustment bracket for the air pump is underneath it. It's a black swivel type bracket. For the alternator and air pump adjustment, just make sure you loosen the bolts that mount it as well as the one that tensions it. Loosening the lock nut for the alternator is HUGE before you attempt the adjustment. If you don't loosen the locknut, you WILL strip the bracket. Ask me how I know?

The swivel bracket is black in color and directly underneath the air pump. It's accessible from the top. I believe automatic rx7's had a different size air pump pulley so the belt is a slightly different size. I don't remember the sizes off the top of my head. If yout have a mirror, you can peak under the air pump and you'll see the bracket. It'll be easily apparent what needs to be removed to access it from the top.

Page A-9 and C-2 of the Factory Service Manual. You can download a copy from the FAQ sticky for free. It's a 12 or 14mm. Hard to see but not that difficult to reach with the airbox removed. That will take up the slack and then you can use the tensioner. And use the proper belt.
