Are these necessary for the front calipers?

I'm missing one of these shim/guard plate thing. The parts catalog shows it as an assy for the caliper itself. Some pics of remanufactured ones dont have it. Which brings me to my question. Is it necessary? I'm about to find a thin washer in its place.

Pretty sure that’s basically there to prevent corrosion between the two components and fusing them together. A thin washer will be fine.
