test your knowledge

ok i am not sure where to begin but i need some help on getting my car running again if you can figure this one out I will be very impressed

I have tried a lot of things and i haven't been able to find the problem yet

I burned up my stock twin turbos about 2 months ago
and decided to go single turbo

I installed a t04 with an hks cast manifold and a hks standard waste gate

redid all the vaccum lines and removed all the smog stuff
I also was delighted to get rid of the rats nest

now here is the problem

I start the car and it fires up perfectly
the car will idle for the next six year or at least thats how good it sounds
it even revs perfectly
but then...
as soon as i get to where boost should start to build it chokes
the motor sounds like its gasping for air or more spark
I have check everything time and time again
run countless searches and come up with nothing.
I tested the ignition and found a bad lead coil and replaced it
that helped but it still didn't solve the problem
I am out of ideas and am asking for people to just throw stuff out.
things i might have passed over or just not even know about
but please be specific
thanks I will post picks of this car when i get it running
its kind of a one of a kind

I take it that you got upgraded fuel, intercooler and ecu. But it sound to me as a fuel problem.

I'm prob not in the position to second guess other ppl on the forum...BUT, if you have a bad or disconnected map sensor, I'm pretty sure she won't idle nice at all. You'll get lots and lots of blue smoke, crazy hesitation in throttle response, but you should still be able to boost.

I only know this because I had the hose on my map sensor pop off, and I had the above mentioned symptoms. -FD-in-FC- said his car idles "perfectly..."

Since you have gone single, what type of ECU are you running? Were your maps based on the stock twins or were they non-seq? At idle, how much vacuum are you pulling and do you see any pulsation in the reading?

Thanks,

Steven

PS. Also, what is your static fuel pressure reading? Do you have any aftermarket regulator? If the leading coil had gone bad, make sure to check the spark plugs. They may be a little fouled and need to be dried out.

ture, it might need tuning.... your car might be running very rich so it sputters when you get boost.... your a/f's might be in the 9's!!!

Ok

here is the total setup

I have stock fuel rails and injectors

upgraded pump but am only trying to run 5.7 psi till i have enough money to upgrade the fuel and ignition

I have a V mounted spearco intercooler
with custom piping

custom 3" downpipe

custom intake

mine's ecu upgrade that i have never been able to get any info about and most likely was tuned for the stock twins

this car was fast and ran really well before i burned up the turbos
I checked the plugs and the spark and eveything seems good the motor came with "NGK R" plugs =)
I am going to go spend some more time pondering over the car but I don't know what else it could be
maybe the map sensor is bad.
is there a way to check?
thanks for all the response
lets crack this bastard and get it back on the road
thanks

when you eliminated all the smog stuff and twin stuff, did you leave the solenoids plugged in anyway, or put in resistors?

You could be rich, it will stumble and pop like nuts when going into boost. Having an unknown ecu with a single is a bit scary. Get a PFC and get it tuned, that is your problem.

I agree with Keith and SubZero, Sounds like she is pig richa and stumbling trying to burn all the fuel.

yeah that has been what i have been thinking

I would love to get a wide banned o2 sensor and find out for sure

probably end up reading in the 7's =\

but at least i would know and could fix the problem

as far as the solenoids i just removed them
I was never able to get too much of a straight answer about the right thing to do with them

everybody seems to have their own way

I just didn't want to cut anything out pre maturely

any tips would be very appreciative

thanks again

Car is running perfectly

turns out that the car had locked in a safe mode

hooked all the stock sensors and solenoids back up

and reset the ecu with the car in the "on" position

which i had never been told to do

and BOOM!!!!!

wow this car is fast and i am only running 5.7 psi

I am going to get some info together, some pics and footage, and I will post a link to it when i have it up

thanks for the help
got me thinking outside the box
