This is where it goes. When I took it off, it was facing the wrong way! Anyways, I can blow through both ends, so it could be a broken check valve that I have a spare for to replace it. However, in the service manual, it's called "gas filter" . You can see it in the upper right of this:


What do the pros think?

I've attached a pic of me holding the part in the correct orientation.

 

Correct it is a filter. You should be able to blow through it both ways.

IIRC the arrow points towards the engine.
