Question Tan Interior Goo Gone

So i picked up my new FD yesterday and the tan interior was horrible so i applied goo gone to it all scrubbed w/nylon brush then wiped off while it was wet, it got all the grease and scuff marks etc out but now its forming a white film on all my tan vinyl, it looks like my interior frosted over. Is there anyway to get rid of this or am i stuck with christmas in my car until i get some interior pieces.

Sounds like now is a good time to paint them if you don't like the tan color.

the film is powdery in appearence, and starts to come off w/ scrubbing. If i apply water it dissapears and then reappears when it dries,im going to go and buy a vinyl conditioner (armor all) and try that with a bit of luck it will solve it

I know what you mean. I tried a little bit of Goo Gone to remove some adhesive left over from removing a turbo timer. What it seems to do is dry out the plastic. I wiped down the offending area w/ Meguiars' Gold Class Vinyl/Plastic protectant and it brought the color back.

You can clean the plastic with laquer thinner but you have to be careful as to much tends
to melt the plastic. I did my tan interior and it came out great. I have been using lacquer
thinner for years to clean up plastic.

Yes... Mr. Clean works wonders... my tan door panels were getting black grime, dirt, etc... built up on it, Mr. Clean worked like a charm. Brought the panels to new condition. I have a pic that I can post when I get home tonight. Just make sure you buy a few of them... they wither away pretty fast.

Please don't EVER use Armor All or anything of that brand on our 7's. That's cheap and destructive to our interiors. Use that on a Civic or something Go with 3M Interior Leather/Vinyl Restorer. Best stuff on the market...

yeah i love mr. clean magic eraser. but i only soak it with a tiny bit of water and i lightly rub the surface that im cleaning or else it leaves white stains (eraser stains) when it dries. try comparing 303 aerospace protectant with the 3M

ohh.... use less water? I gotta try that... That white stuff that you speak of usually just rubs off. What I do is, immediately after using the eraser, I follow it up with a soft terry cloth just wipe up the area.

303 protectant? Never heard of it... you having good luck with it? Got a link to it? I might have to try it...

Never use alcohol or solvent based cleaners on our sevens unless you want to strip the interior paint. Goo Gone has kerosene and other petrole base chemicals in it...(I have never tried the water based stuff) The white film is solvent soaking into the plastic essentially bleaching it out. The coating on the plastic protects it from ultraviolet. Solvent and alcohol based cleaners strip the coating and cause the plastic to bleach out. The interior paint on our cars is so old at this point, it is very easy to strip off.

I design the systems that spray the interiors of cars. I know these products.

i cant believe you dont know what 303 is! they have a great line of products including great cleaners and protectants. try www.303products.com (free tiny samples, takes a long time to arrive though) or they should be avaible at almost any autoparts store (autozone pep boys etc). its the best stuff! oh yeah and the magic eraser works on plastic trims too but remember to use very little pressure and dont get the eraser soaking wet.

so if i was to use goo gone on a part of the center console the previous owner painted .....it would strip the ugly paint off? im not worried about it damaging the finish under that because if i cant get the paint off ill have to buy new panels anyway. So a fee mr. clean magic erasers, a 303 vinyl reconditioning product and nothing alcohol based i think that pretty much sums up what i need to go and buy?

If you want to get paint off the plastic interior panels, use ELO (Easy Lift Off).

The compositon of dyes and paints are VERY simular, at least with the sherwin willams brand. Its just a little more flexable wich does not matter for the hard interior plastics.

that stuff takes forever, I use 1 part laquer thinner to 1 part prep solv and it takes 60-90 seconds. Be careful because it can melt away and damage the surface layer of the plastics.

you wont really need mr. clean magic erasers to clean your interior. just a bucket of water 10 parts water 1 part woolite original with a cloth (micro fiber works best ). after that you can condition your plastic parts with the 303 AEROSPACE PROTECTANT which works for all plastics including vinyl. also if you have leather seats go get some lexol leather conditioner (maybe you already knew this already.) or if you have cloth seats visit 303products.com if i rememebr correctly they have a fabric guard kinda spray and a fabric cleaner (or all purpose i forgot). the fabric guard works great.
