Tail-light options for the 3rd-gen. RX-7?

What tail-light options are there for the FD3S? The stock design reminds me of a Ford Escort's. I searched online but every aftermarket part I've found looks cheap, ugly, and/or "ricey". The best alternative I've found so far is the OEM '99-spec conversion, which is a great cosmetic improvement, but it still has the "black telephone" shape. I was thinking of installing the '99-spec tails and masking off the running-lights, brake-lights, and hazards, and color-matching the rest of the housings with the body. Has anyone ever done this or seen this done before? Any pics or examples?

Seems like you are dreaming up quite a list of mods there... how about concentrate on getting a car first then worrying about this.

Hey, it looks like a Ford Taurus, but only because the Taurus copied the design.

likes the stock tail lights anyway

I've seen the lights masked off and the black portion of the tails painted with matching color, looks ok but more or less looks like a smaller phone handset. Just the black portion of the tail light was painted. the rest of the lights remained the same.

Just do the DIY conversion to 99spec, or I'm also a huge fan of the CF covers.

I don't know what's with you guys, but I think the rear end of the FD (stock) is one of the best looking on any car, past or present

preference I guess...

Some people like it some do not, personally I am not sure why they would not as the black RX-7 has the effect of the lights being painted body color, so therefore in some eyes then all black RX-7's look bad. I disagree, I think it looks nice, also the stocks look nice, really just preference. I painted mine similar to the Millen RX-7 as pictured here...cost about $300 at the time

Good luck!~

Agree^^ only if it's the 99 SPec i don't like the 1st version tailights that are on the 93-95 7's i think they look the horribleness, and the 99's are just plain sexy and hot!!
you could do your own type of mod, just please don't make it rice. no one likes rice, but people are stupid, please do not join the ranks

that looks like a Z4 with a Carrera GT wing.

IMO you have two options:

1.) remain stock

2.) 99 spec (I would convert them instead of buying OEM)

I'm mixed on the RE-A cover, i love it on some cars, hate it on others. Depends on fitment and color scheme I think. If I choose to change from wingless it'll be about the only one I'll consider.

The '99-spec rear-ends are attractive, but I prefer the tail-light designs of the 360 Modena, C5 Corvette, Skyline, etc.

I think what I'll do is go with the '99-spec tails, mask off the turns/brakes/runners and paint the whole assembly to match the body so it doesn't have the "black telephone" look.

Bro, I'm totally anti-rice. My intentions visually for the car is pretty much a '99-spec body conversion, with minor differences; c.f. front-spoiler, side-splitters, rear-diffuser, C-West headlights, and Scoot hood (the hood will be painted red to match the body).

the signature is a great place to list your accomplishments, your goals......not so much.

im all for the 93-95 lights, maybe with this painting
99spec....sure
re cover....sometimes....think it would look good on a stock body MBM?

other than designing your own lights(which i dont see on your goal list) youre pretty much out of luck. perhaps the lack of tail light modification options stems from some lack of necessity....hmm
