tail light mod sizes?

hi all

bought my heat gun and am ready to pull my lights appart, have bookmarked the iluvmyrx7 page and have just 1 question...

the site lists 75mm and 80mm for the cut sizes to match the oem lights, somewhere i seem to have read that someone has tried different sizes or spacings than oem copy and found them better???

haven't been able to find it with searches

anyone know that thread?

The 80s are fine but when I did mine I found that the 75 was a bit big so I went with 70 and it looks great.

I did all these cars.

I think i did mine 70 80 and I screwed up the paint pretty bad but they still look good as long as you aren't right up close looking for problems, but my car isn't a show car. Just make sure you heat the glue up good and seal it back together really good or else you get condensation in there.

One thing for sure is wait till the paint dries completely before you lift the circles off. othewise if wet, it will stretch and get on the part you just masked.

actually am thinking of buying a couple of feet of thin black adhesive sheet from the local car parts store

the kind that sticker shops use as stock to cut their signs from, can get it in semi-gloss black or carbon

that way the mod would be completely reversable if i cocked it up or future owners wanted to go back to stock

good idea eric, I was thinking of doing the same thing. Only, I would worry about the sticker comming off over time; heat from sunlight exposure maybe? I dont really know, but being able to reverse the process would always be nice. I myself can't see why someone would want to do that, but hey, if u can, why not. Who's got a template?

I think that is a great idea but I see one potential problem. Not only do you have to paint the face of the lens when doing this, but also the sides that slip back into the plastic housing. Light will escape around the edges of it otherwise and make the mod look very cheesy.. might be tough to pull off with an adhesive sheet (a 90 degree bend along a curve).

Having done 5 light assemblys myslef I honestly don't believe that puting a sticker on the outside is going to hold up...And yes, the light will bleed through on the sides...

isn't a sticker on the outside the way the stock ones are done?

If you are talking about the premade 99 lights I beleive those the lenses are already blacked out...like the plastic is black with the circles left clear...if you are talking about the ones that people redo, those are usualy done with spray paint. I have seen some where they use a sticker and do like carbon fiber look and all that...personally I don't think it will stand the test of time.

here is a pretty poor pic of some late model rear lights but it does seem to show the colored plastic circle is molded slightly raised and then the unraised section is somehow blacked out

you know what's really weird...I have a 1994 R2 and the lights had the plastic circles already raised...however, they were not blacked out... Anyone elses like that? has the circles raised but not blacked out?
