Question super low mileage concerns?

hi all,

i'm new to the forum and thank you in advance for your knowledge and advice on all things rotary.

i have searched but am looking for more specific information on this topic... i am currently looking at a super low mileage FD RX-7 for purchase (what does the '3S' indicate when some of you indicate 'FD3S'?). i am a little concerned that with such infrequent use, the car may need rubber and fluids... but i believe that the real 'guts' of the car will be fine. it was properly warmed up to hot every 3 months, etc. and the history has been recorded nicely.

would a car with under 10,000 miles give anyone concern? i live very close to Peter Farrell Supercars... i'm sure that they could sort out any issues if necessary.

any input is appreciated.

As you said, rubber (coolant & vacuum hoses, tires, etc.), all fluids, and check the stickies on this site. Lots of good info on similar subjects. Other than that, if I had the money and didn't already have an FD, I'd buy it out from under you!

FD3S is a constant part of the VIN for the 3rd-gen RX7. That's also in the stickies, IIRC.

My biggest concerns would be related to corrosion in the following areas:

Brake System
Engine Oil
Cooling System
Electronics

If the brakes have been flushed regularly (every 2 years) then brake system corrosion is probably a non issue. If they haven't been flushed then the biggest problem you may encounter is a leaking ABS pump. The calipers and whatnot will probably be corroded as well, but they are easily and relatively cheaply rebuilt or replaced. New ABS pumps are a couple grand.

If the engine oil has been changed every 6 months to 1 year, and the coolant has been done every, say 2 years, you should be good there.

The reason I mention the electronics is because electrolytic capacitors tend to die after 10-15 years and will sometimes leak corrosive materials onto the PCB potentially ruining the PCB. There are numerous threads on the forum concerning issues with speedometers, tachometers, and airbag computers dying usually due to bad caps or other components. There's nothing you can do about the electronics other than replace the caps and hope the PCB still works if corroded.
