Sunroof weatherstrip - how to replace

I have water seeping through the sunroof weatherstrip. The weatherstrip is deteriorated from being parked outdoors since 1993! I'm afraid that the drain tubes will become overwhelmed in a serious rainstorm, and the overflow will drip onto my seats (again).

It doesn't look too hard to remove the old weatherstrip and (presumably) just slip in a new one. Should cost me just under $200 for the OEM part.

The local Mazda dealer told me he needs to remove the entire sunroof in order to replace the weatherstrip. Megabucks!

Does anyone know how difficult is it to replace the sunroof weatherstrip? Do I need to remove the entire sunroof mechanism?

Any guidance is appreciated.

Jim

Metal or glass roof? The weatherstripping on them are different and there is no need to take apart anything, it can be done on the car very easily.

on a '93? Metal. You can do this yourself in a few hours.

Here's my glass sunroof write up. It's not exactly the same, but it shows you can do this pretty easily with no precedence.

I swapped my metal for glass on a 93 That's why I asked.

I have taken both metal and glass weatherstripping out without disassembling anything, just half opened the roof, went around pulling the weatherstripping off and then reinstalling it.

I appreciate your write up though! I didn't know you could take out the glass like that. When I swapped roofs I took out almost the whole interior to swap everything.

You should have no problem doing it yourself for a metal sunroof either. You just open the sunroof, pull off the old weather stripping, and then install the new one. Couldn't be easier.

Thanks for all the comments.

My sunroof is metal. I am hoping to change the weatherseal without disassembling more than necessary.

This appears to be the part. Cost approx $175 - lots for a piece of rubber, but not much one can do about it...

Peeling the old one doesn't look too difficult. Does the new one go on easily?

I put one on my metal sunroof lid. It was easy; I just removed the interior lining from the sunroof, then just unbolted the 4 10mm (maybe 12mm, I can't remember) nuts holding the sunroof on the frame. Take the sunroof lid off, and pull/peel the old seal off, put on the new one. Took about 30-45 minutes.

Call Ray Crowe at Malloy Automall, I just ordered a new weatherstripping for the Glass moonroof for about $155.

I will try and take a pic later to show you that nothing needs to get taken apart, just halfway open will do.

+1 There is no need to take anything apart.
